If this is correct, there seem to be a few mistakes in what's been reported from last season. He joined in July and left on 26th February, so his league record was:

P W D L GF GA Points

20 9 6 5 32 24 33 (out of a possible 60)

He did very well in Europe. The following stats include home and away wins over Lille, a 3-0 away win at Brondby to claw back a 2-0 first leg home deficit, and home wins over Levski Sofia (5-0) and Gent (5-1). They also only went out on GD to Rangers.

P W D L GF GA

12 7 2 3 23 12

Also some good perspective here, in the article and the comments:

Who does this remind you of??

"I love the Portuguese League and always will. Although I am an FCP supporter, one of the things I love the most about our league is following Sporting's doings and comings and goings. With their amazing world-renowned Academy, they always have a crop of young-up-and-comers to watch... and with their eccentric board they always provide a novela-type story line. Thank you Sporting for constantly being in such a state of confusion and soap-opera style turmoil. You make our liga a little bit more interesting!"

His league record last season before being sacked was:

P: 20

W: 9

D: 6

L: 5

Win %: 45%

After he left and Jose was in charge, the stats were:

P: 10

W: 4

D: 3

L: 3

They finished 3rd.

PT Cup: Out in 5th Round (entered 2nd Round).

League Cup: He got them to Semi-Finals but was sacked before they got put out by Benfica.

Results in Europe were decent:

Nordsj?lland 0 - 1 Sporting CP

Sporting CP 2 - 1 Nordsj?lland

Sporting CP 0 - 2 Br?ndby

Br?ndby 0 - 3 Sporting CP

Lille 1 - 2 Sporting CP

Sporting CP 5 - 0 Levski Sofia

Sporting CP 5 - 1 Gent

Gent 3 - 1 Sporting CP

Sporting CP 1 - 0 Lille

Levski Sofia 1 - 0 Sporting CP

Rangers 1 - 1 Sporting CP

Sporting CP 2 - 2 Rangers*

Came top of Europa League group by 4 points.

P: 12

W: 7

D: 2

L: 3

Win %: 58%

*Worth remembering that Sporting should have killed Rangers that night, and Edu scored in the 90th to win on away goals.

My worry is Sporting Lisbon like Rangers and Celtic are a big club.

I would imagine that if any of us became the manager of Celtic or Rangers at the end of our spell

we probably would have had more wins than losses even though we had no experience.

Because you would expect the players that were their to be better than those of the other smaller Scottish sides.

My point is Sporting are so big, my next door neighbour Ecky McGlumpin would probably go on a good run of results

with them before he was found out.

Paulo Sergio does sound a wee bit better though.

Ecky could probably make a solid number two.

Sporting have fallen well behind Porto and Benfica in the past few years. They finished 4th the season before Sergio took over, and ended up 3rd last season. They are not currently in the same mould as the Old Firm are in Scotland.
