Knighthood for Beckham?

Just noticed this on the BBC Football Gossip page

Now I've no doubt Beckham's a nice guy who does a lot for charity etc but surely there are dozens who are more deserving who wouldn't get a look in as they haven't got royalty as godparents to their kids or will generate votes for call me Dave!

He does do a lot of charity work and has put a lot of effort into getting the olympics and trying for the world cup. I havent really got a problem with him getting a knighthood although I think its maybe 5-10 years to early.

Totally agree mate, it's a complete joke that footballers are getting knighthoods for doing something that they love to do, and are getting paid far too much for doing it. The real heroes in this country are the people who struggle to get by with illnesses and the like, but not thinking about themselves and instead striving to help others out whilst living on the breadline.

Beckham is so thick as pig shit he couldn't even spell the word "knighthood", let alone be deserving of one.

TBF to Beckham, he has done a shed load os stuff for charity in the past as well as spending time with the armed forces.

I'm not overly fussed wither way tbh, but I can think of worse people a Knighthood could be given to.

Maybe Picard has a point regarding it maybe coming a bit too soon.

I agree, it's a foregone conclusion that he'll get a knighthood at some point but this year is definitely way too soon

Perhaps we should set an age limit for things such as knighthoods -- say 40.

Of course the person needs to have earned such an honour -- charity work, support of country, invention, employment, representation of the country home and abroad etc.

Certainly not while he's still playing albeit in America. No issue with him getting one but I've always considered it to be a 'Lifetime Achievement' type accolade and not something he should be getting while still in his 30's

Oh aye, I agree with what you stated mate, and there's no doubting he does a lot of good work, but so does a lot of other people who aren't in the limelight, and don't have his money to set things up like he does if that makes sense. There are plenty people on this board who do tons of charity work and take time out to coach kids football and the like, but they'll never get nominated for a knighthood. The whole thing to me just seems like a 'jobs for the boys" scenario.

I'm not sure how the whole process works, John. I suppose these things divide opinion.

I would admit to at times growing tired of the PR machine that is behind him, although he does come across as a decent genuine bloke. Obviously being a decent and genuine bloke is not by itself a ticket to getting a knighthood.

Know its got owt to do with this debate, but always felt he moved to America a bit early in his career.

he admitted himself that he moved too early but when he signed he was told he had no future at Real Madrid and so he thought it might be time ot do what he always intended to do. Then Capello realised what he could bring but it was too late.

Ive got nothin against him getting a knighthood. I know its Scotland its a dirty word due to Rangers misuse of it but Beckham is a patriot. He worked on the Olympic bid and 2018 WC bid os I genuinely believe he wanted those event to happen in Britain because he is proud of being British, unlike Sir anthony Hopkins who gave up British citizenship for American. He is constantly doing charity work, he isnt as preachy with it as the likes of Bono, he is a Unicef ambassador and epitomises to young people what can be achieved with limited talent but with maximum work ethic.

no doubt good attitude, and seems a decent human being if not brains of britain with a good pr team behind him. also could strike a dead ball something awesome. however, would this attitude have got him to where he is if he looked like peter beardsley or if he wasnt born at this time in this celebrity obsessed hello magazine culture where ignorant nihilism is celebrated? in all im not really sure what he has really done to improve our country if im honest and would seem an award for being a recogniseable face that foreigners assosciate with the country more than anything.

on a more spiteful level, hes been told to offend nobody and do this zoolander eye squinting thing to make him look 'sofistikated' plus he insists on naming his kids after pornstars which a generation of chavs have imitated.

Granted he is a good looking guy which has helped him in terms of his personal revenue etc but do you really think Ferguson picked him every week cos he sold shirts. I dont think so. He has done more for this country than any other modern footballer I can think of. There is no doubing his work ethic. He will admit himself that he was by no means the best player of his generation or even of his class at Man U but he worked on every aspect of his game tirelessly. The reason he can strike a dead ball so well is cos he stayed behind for hours to practice, not because he looked nice.

I would think Brand Beckham's people are planting stories like this.

Our English Friends are obsessed with this guy to the detriment of their own team. They are cynically trying to pick the god parent who can give them the most pull in their plans for 2012.

Once the knighthood is bagged watch them pull out all the stops to hog the olympic games and have Beckham light the flame.

Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and even our own Paul Lambert have achieved more in the game.

This is the final straw in the cult of celebrity over achievment.

Paul Lambert went to Dortmund and won the Champions League with them. He has also played in a world cup.

Is he getting a knighthood?

Becks gets one for winning one title at Real Madrid. As well as knocking England out of several world cups and euro champs with a sending off, a missed tackle and numerous missed pens. His "greatest" England moment came after his lack of team discipline cost England 2 goals down their right side. That last free kick only made England avoid the plays offs that year.

Maybe it's Scotland putting Beckham up for this!!

Great. Not really more than what Beckham though is it?

Knighthood would be thoroughly deserved IMO. Seems a top chap.

Oh and it's not really just one title at Madrid is it? Six at Man Utd isn't bad.

youve just completely overlooked his domestic honours. And some could argue that plying his trade successfully abroad actually makes him more commendable than those who stayed at Man U (although admittedly he wouldve stayed had he been allowed to). But it is all the work out of the game that Beckham does that has been given recognition. The Olympic Bid, the WC bid, the charity work, the profile of football in America. Its countless how much public charity work he has done. I dont see anyone saying whys David Jason been knighted, all he did was fall through a bar. Cos that wouldnt be fair, and neither is this.

Think he would deserve it if he got it to be honest.

It seems the Rebecca Loos incident has been erased from history and it's all about his family man image and charity work. Perhaps it 15 or 20 yrs time certainly not at the minute.

As for asking Wills to be Godfather...

Snake Plissken

A token award from an archaic figurehead...

If that actually means something to him then good luck to the chap.

Personally, I wouldn't accept one if offered but I don't think one receives a knighthood for video games and masturbation so it's probably a moot point.

You used to become a sir for winning battles, discovering countries or reaching poles.

Now you just need to be a slow right midfielder.

You still become one for doing that stuff. The point being that people got knighthoods for as much or less 500 years ago also.
