Away goals rule

since 1990, non OF teams have been subject to the Away goals rule 13 times. (including the intertoto cup)

11 of these have resulted in the Scottish team being eliminated and just 2 (aberdeen v dnipro and Livingston v Vaduz - both 1-1) have seen the scottish team go through.

Why are scottish teams now so poor away from home.

Celtic havent won a CL game way from home yet have they?

Hearts recent away ties in Europe:

2009 Dinamo Zagreb 0-4

2006 Sparta Prague 0-0

2006 AEK Athens 0-3

2006 NK Siroki Brijeg 0-0

2004 Basle 2-1

2004 Feyenoord 0-3

2004 Braga 2-2

2003 Bordeaux 1-0

2003 Zeljeznicar Sarajevo 0-0

2000 Stuttgart 0-1

2000 IBV Vestmannaeyjar 2-0

1998 Real Mallorca 1-1

1998 Lantana 1-0

1996 Red Star Belgrade 0-0

1993 Athletico Madrid 0-3

1992 Standard Liege 0-1

1992 Slavia Prague 0-1

1990 Bologna 0-3

1990 Dnipro 1-1

so, 19 games for us away from home in that time:

4 Wins

7 draws

9 losses

10 Goals Scored

24 Against

2 of the wins were against woeful opposition.

2 of the wins were absolutely outstanding

The draw v Red star belgrade and Braga were outstanding. Other seemingly great ones were lessened IMO due to being second legs that saw the opposition go through. (for example, drawing with sparta prague was good, but we had to overcome a 2 goal deficit).

At home though, its different.

Our losses at Tynecastle:

2003 Bordeaux 0-2 very very good team - lost to eventual winners

1998 Real Mallorca 0-1 Very very good team - Finalist

1992 Standard Liege 0-1 Reasonable team, but not great

1976 SV Hamburg 1-4 Winners

1961 Inter Milan 0-1 Lost to Winners

1960 Benfica 1-2 Winners

So, of those 6, 2 won the competition, 3 were knocked out by the winners, and the final one was standard liege.

Our mentality in Scottish football of "keep it tight and see if we can nick something" is holding us back, as we dont have the players who are capable of playing possession and turning defence into attack quickly. Putting lots of men behind the ball and then punting it up the pitch isnt the way to do it.

The Italians perfected that - they always seem to have better players than us, though - that's the main issue, imo.

Stupid Sexy Flanders

Away goals is a terrible rule. How can it be fair that you can play a team over two legs, both teams score the same amount of goals and yet one of them goes through?! Nonsense.
