Say What Again

Do any of the JKB folk have web host they'd recommend (ideally free) ? In fact, does such a thing as 'free' even exist any more? My ISP (AOL) used to provide a small amount of totally free space, but it seems to have stopped it. All of the places I'm finding through Google suggest free but then jump in with a $20 charge for the domain name right at the end. The lowest of these charges I found was about ?10 which isn't too bad, but if I could get free, that would obviously be preferable.

I'm not looking for any serious amounts of space, just something where I can experiment a few ideas, while I'm self-teaching.

The URL/domain doesn't make the slightest bit of difference either as nobody is going to see it except me.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Captain Canada

I'd highly recommend www.parrothosting.co.uk - again not free but the service is brilliant and better than most of the bigger companies.

I'm hosting 4 sites just now for ?2.50 a month total. You have the intial named domain and can then use your webspace to add as many others as you like up to your space & traffic allowances. Off the top of my head its 2GB of space & 200GB a month traffic which is more than enough.

edit: just read your actual question - if its just free storage space you need I think the Dropbopx app comes with some and is also great for syncing data from PC to mobile.

I use fasthosts to register the domain names and my hosting is covered by http://www.dataprism.co.uk/hosting

I know the guy that runs the hosting server, he hosts a couple of my sites and is very cheap/flexible.

if you just want to practice web development & don't want to pay out for the service then I suggest setting up an Apache server on your machine(its free!)

bare in mind though that apache can be difficult to get to grips with at first, buts its not too bad

if you just want to practice/learn web development you could just install a webserver on your own machine and fiddle with things locally.

as has been said it can be a pain to set this up but there are 'friendly' ways to do it.

you can download and install a programme called XAMPP which will give you an Apache server and all the trimmings in one easy package:

presuming that you're on Windows here is the link - http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html

Thanks CH and others.

It's specifically the hosting part itself I'm interested in just. Already familiar with Dreamweaver - but an older version so brushing up on CS5 - but have never uploaded/hosted a site. Wanted to have a bash at that first then continue messing around in DW.

Once that's done, I'll also go do the Apache route as you and another suggested.
