"Fella"

Acey

Had a bad day, Acey ??

Nah - only got up at 5pm; haven't had time to have a bad day yet! :P

Just thinking about annoying expressions; "fella" has snuck under the radar recently into everyday conversation. This isn't Yorkshire!

I'm partial to the odd chief. Dude doesn't sit too right at the end of a sentence. I'll let you have it as a greeting.

The winner.

People actually type that in posts on here.

It beggars belief.

Nothing wrong with the odd 'chief' now and again. Now 'bud' on the other hand...

Dude is a terrible one.

You are not in America, don't use it.

Nah there's nothing wrong with most of these suggestions, but ONLY if it forms part of your regional dialiect.

For example: my boss, from Preston, occasionally refers to me as "fella". No problem. It is NOT ok for a Scotsman to use this term. Ever.

What I do have a problem with though, is being called "sweetheart"...by a man.

I prefer a nice scottish 'felly'. Although I can't say I use it often, unless i'm refering to my felly.

You're all a bunch of tozzers. Who cares what you use at the end of a sentence. Actually I can think of one particular poster that uses fella in almost every one of his posts. It is rather annoying. I take it all back ;)

The worst of all is that staple of Eastenders-speak "mate", which unfortunately seems to be used almost universally in all walks of life. It is a relative newcomer to these parts, but such is the power of the mass media that its spread has been irresistible. A horrible word.

I hate women calling me sweetheart, darling and dear! If we called them that we would be accused of sexism/being patronising.

I quite like calling people Amanda and watching them be confused. Unless their name's Amanda, it doesn't confuse them if their name's Amanda because their name's Amanda so calling them Amanda seems like a perfectly natural thing to do because their name's Amanda.

On the basis that Makween probably did a bit of Latin at school, I think that's exactly what his post was saying.

I haven't noticed the use of "fella" here, but loathe "dude" (pron. dood) and dislike the universality in Oz of "mate". My top hate is Buddy/bud.
