Buffalo Bill
On this day twenty years ago, The Silence of the Lambs was released in UK cinemas. It still remains one of my all-time favourite films, what brilliant plot, characters and acting. Funny yet scary, romantic yet twisted, utterly compelling. Your thoughts please Kickback on a modern masterpiece:

Johanes de Silentio
Yes, as is Hannibal and Red Dragon. Cox doesn't compare with Hopkins I'm afraid. No way is Red Dragon better than Manhunter - Hannibal, maybe. Cox was fantastic as Lektor in Manhunter, imo, although it's impossible to imagine anyone else playing Lecter in Silence of The Lambs. Wasn't Hopkins (possibly my favourite actor) a little past it for Hannibal & Red Dragon?

Currahee!
Excellent film. Not seen it in a while though. I remember watching an interview with Anthony Hopkins not long after it was released. He sneaked into a cinema and sat at the back watching everyones reactions etc. When the film finished he tappped the boy in front of him on the shoulder and done that breath intake and asked if he had enjoyed it. The boy almost soiled his pants.

I wouldn't mind being 'past it' like Hopkins when I get to his age! Hannibal is a beautifully shot film, particularly the Florence scenes but Ridley Scott messed it up with the ending. I also felt they should've made the film three hours long to try and capture the brooding mood of the novel.

Totally agree on all points re your 'Hannibal' comments. Any thoughts on Hannibal Rising, people? I liked it.

Boomstick
One of those rare films that is every bit as good as the book. Most adaptations come across as crass and not a little bit desperate. Exceptions include Silence of the Lambs, No Country for Old Men and The Shining.

Your thoughts please Kickback on a modern masterpiece: Thought it was ok. Always considered Hopkins performance over rated (despite the oscar) whereas the screenplay deserved every plaudit . Johanes de Silentio
I enjoyed the mauling in Kaunas. Sorry, I'm getting the film mixed up with the Rangers game there. Easy done - Hannibal Lecter is Lithuanian, and has maroon eyes! Mind you, he also has an extra finger on one of his hands, which is more of an in-bred Hobo trait! Only a Game
Sad to say I've never seen it Its one of the most compelling and atmospheric movies EVER made. Drop what you are doing this weekend. Get it out or download it If you die and you go up there having not seen it, they probably wont let you in. Dont take the chance. Wouldnt bother with the sequel/prequel if I'm honest but Silence of the Lambs is a true movie masterpiece.
J.T.F.Robertson
What became of your lamb, Clarice? They killed him. Well, Clarice - have the lambs stopped screaming? You still wake up sometimes, don't you? You wake up in the dark and hear the screaming of the lambs. Yes. And you think if you save poor Catherine, you could make them stop, don't you? You think if Catherine lives, you won't wake up in the dark ever again to that awful screaming of the lambs. Great film! Also, Jody is hot. Boris
I remember going to the Odeon to see this. It's a good film, not seen it for ages, but I remember thinking the last time I saw it that it felt rather dated. Some films transcend the era they were shot in but SotL has that late 80's early 90's feel to it.

Given that Hopkins uses method acting techniques you have to wonder how the heck he made it through filming SotL without driving himself completely round the twist. Fabulous film, even if it did scare the living daylights out of me back then....and would probably still do it now....

Some films transcend the era they were shot in but SotL has that late 80's early 90's feel to it. I would agree with this, without taking anything away from the film. Note that there is very little 'colour' in the movie. The prison is grey, the clothes are brown for Clarice, grey for Lecter, colourless for BB, the winter of West Virginia etc. Everything is demure. The only real splash of colour comes after Lecter brakes loose of hs cuffs. I would say the way the film is shot, close-ups, angles, and the music, and possibly the fashion/hairstyles also lends itself to your 'dated' assertion. Good point, Boris.
