It still remains one of my all-time favourite films, what brilliant plot, characters and acting. Funny yet scary, romantic yet twisted, utterly compelling. No way is Red Dragon better than Manhunter - Hannibal, maybe. Cox was fantastic as Lektor in Manhunter, imo, although it's impossible to imagine anyone else playing Lecter in Silence of The Lambs. He sneaked into a cinema and sat at the back watching everyones reactions etc. When the film finished he tappped the boy in front of him on the shoulder and done that breath intake and asked if he had enjoyed it. I also felt they should've made the film three hours long to try and capture the brooding mood of the novel. Yup, Michael Mann gives it the usual gloss, but it's still a corking movie. Drop what you are doing this weekend. Get it out or download it If you die and you go up there having not seen it, they probably wont let you in. Dont take the chance. It's a good film, not seen it for ages, but I remember thinking the last time I saw it that it felt rather dated. Given that Hopkins uses method acting techniques you have to wonder how the heck he made it through filming SotL without driving himself completely round the twist. Note that there is very little 'colour' in the movie. The prison is grey, the clothes are brown for Clarice, grey for Lecter, colourless for BB, the winter of West Virginia etc. Everything is demure. The only real splash of colour comes after Lecter brakes loose of hs cuffs. I would say the way the film is shot, close-ups, angles, and the music, and possibly the fashion/hairstyles also lends itself to your 'dated' assertion. Good point, Boris.
