Points for (at least) 3rd

How many points do you reckon we need to secure 3rd place? Looks like DU could be the only team that could potentially get near us.

Last 3 years 3rd place team ended up with 63, 59 & 60 points. We've already got 51!!

A bit less than 2nd place and a wee bit more than 4th!

Let's hope Celtic pump United today and we beat them next week. After that I would say we are safe in 3rd.

I'd like a draw between those two.

If we have a similar run as we did in November and December in the next 8 games (in which we don't play the OF) you never know where we might end up.

If we are ambitious we will want Utd to win, if we are playing safe for third we will want Celtic to win. I'll go for the former. :ninja:

Five victories in our thirteen remaining games should do it.We're probably already there unless Dundee Utd go mental.

Look up,that's where we should be looking.

No chance. Utd win is the best result for Hearts today.

No it isn't. Let's secure 3rd as fast as we can before worrying about catching the old firm. A win for the arabs today and they will come to Tynie looking for 3 pts,and then they start to close the gap a bit and I am not convinced we have the mentality to scrap it out!

Given our league record this season I would think we have. :ninja:

If you don't think we've got the mentality to hold onto 3rd from our current position, I would stop worrying about anything relating to the OF.

Utd are 22 points behind us mate. The best result for us today is a united win and then we can take care of united ourselves next week.

I can't believe anybody wants a Celtic win today.

We secured 3rd a few weeks ago as Inverness and Motherwell dropped like a rock, even the Killie machine has halted...

We have only lost 2 games, both away to the o/f at a time we are suffering from a desrupted attack(loss of KK been main and Rudi just returning)...in the same run of form we also beat both o/f whilst at strength.

DunU are not a threat 7wins in 20games...22 points behind 5games in hand even if they got 10points from games in hand they still are 12 behind.

Admittedly our form has been poor since the Caley game but we have muddled thru and got players returning to form so although looking up I think is somewhat pointless we are very safe in 3rd.

Had we not crumbled at Parkhead I'd be in total agreement. United have plenty games in hand to close the gap although they have to play us 3 times so 3rd place is in our own hands. I suppose I could back pedal and say a draw is the best result but still say we have to worry about 3rd before anything else and the fact that we won yesterday means that celtic winning doesn't put us any further behind them.

United won't trouble us for 3rd. They may have 5 games in hand but with they certainly won't win them all.

So....

A Utd win for me today.

I hope United absolutely ream Celtic today.

Anyone who thinks United will even come close to catching us needs to give themselves a shake.

Spot on as usual I.J.

3rd is safe we should be looking higher.

Rangers will drop points due to the amount of games they have to play, Cup replay, Europe, postponed fixtures etc.

If teams can take points off Celtic you just never know what might happen.

Less than half a million? Maybe quite a bit less. Lucky if we do much more than break even over a couple of Europa League qualifying rounds, especially if the draw is unkind.

Oh, and I too can't understand anyone wanting other than a Dundee United win today.

The lack of ambition of some suggests they'd think a draw next week against United would be a decent result, which it would if it's all about consolidating third (which is ours barring a cataclysmic collapse of the sort not even Hearts have come close to achieving before)..

People wanting hibs to win yesterday.

This is a strange place.

The mind boggles. It's time people realise that unless we implode in catastrophic style, nobody's catching us.

3rd place is in the bag as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I reckon we could have 3rd guaranteed before the split.

If we beat the arabs next weekend then I will be happy to declare 3rd spot is safe. Then we can play chase the old firm!

Its mathematically guaranteed if the points differential is 16 points or more by the split. Given that the gap is currently 15 on paper and possibly 10 if Dundee Utd win all their games in hand (of which there is not a hope in hell) and no one is making any impression on us, in fact we are slowly but surely getting out of sight. I reckon it will be mathematically in the bag with 7 games to go and possibly 8. i.e a lead of 22(25) points over the nearest challenger ( who I expect to be Kilmarnock as it is now)

A win over Utd on Saturday and Kilmarnock next time we play them (5th March) leaves everyone else needing an unprecedented miracle to catch us IMO

What will be doing differently next weekend if we don't start playing chasing the OF until after we beat United? If we are level with 10 minutes to go, will we settle for a draw rather than going all out for the win?

Dundee United are 22 points behind albeit with 4 games in hand however the best they can get to is 10 behind having played an equal number of games as us - they also have to play twice a week until the split with 13 games including Cup ties to play in the next 8 weeks before the split on 9th April. Any cup replay would increase their fixture congestion - they also have to play Rangers & Hearts twice before the split games which could make or break any outside chance they have of catching us ........ put it this way does anybody ever remember any team overturning a 22 point deficit this far into a season?

Points wise have Celtic and Rangers already guaranteed at least 3rd?

No however they are not far away - 65 points has so far always been good enough for 3rd every SPL season thus far so they only need 4 more points (Celtic) & 9 more (Rangers) whilst we need 14 points from our remaining 13 games ..... of course mathematically several teams can still target & achieve above 65 points.

We got 59 points in 2009 but the bar was considerably lower as we only actually needed to beat Aberdeen's tally of 53

The total we needed to beat each season is highlighted

2000-01: 3rd Hibernian 66, 4th Kilmarnock 54

2001-02: 3rd Livingston 58, 4th Aberdeen 55

2002-03: 3rd Heart of Midlothian 63, 4th Kilmarnock 57

2003-04: 3rd Heart of Midlothian 68, 4th Dunfermline Athletic 53

2004-05: 3rd Hibernian 61, 4th Aberdeen 61

2005-06: 3rd Rangers 73, 4th Hibernian 56

2006-07: 3rd Aberdeen 65, 4th Heart of Midlothian 61

2007-08: 3rd Motherwell 60, 4th Aberdeen 53

2008-09: 3rd Heart of Midlothian 59, 4th Aberdeen 53

2009-10: 3rd Dundee United 63, 4th Hibernian 54

To get 3rd you (obviously) need to finish above 4th place - from your list TC I see that 61pts is the highest any 4th place team has mustered so 62pts would appear to be a realistic target for 3rd

3 more wins and 3rd will be ours.

IF we beat Dundee United 3 more times this season then you are probably correct however realistically we probably need another 4 or 5 wins ie 63 or 66 points to be virtually certain of 3rd - we still however have 39 points to play for!

Actually I'd say that 58 looks more like the magic number.

Exceeding 57 has been sufficient 10 times out of 12.
