Beckham

England's biggest football mistake of modern times ... building the side around Beckham rather than building it around Scholes.

Quite. But then Scholes does have ginger hair, isn't photogenic and isn't married to a pop star. All of these aspects seemed to be more important in the Beckham heyday.

Scholes is the only English player (prior to Rooney, potentially) who the epithet "world class" can truly sit easily with.

Never rated him as highly as his peers, Del Piero, Zidane, Scholes, Ronaldo, Shevchenko etc.

Beckham swung in the odd good free kick with that right foot of his but he never 'lit up' a tournament. In fact his performances at Euro 04 and Germany 06 were pitiful at times.

Could've been better (and perhaps better liked) if he hadn't gone all metro-sexual/love-me-I'm-a-nice-guy brand-Beckham on us.

Buffalo Bill

.

Agreed. There were plenty of better footballers around at the time he was at his peak.

Good player, far from great though.

Quite frankly the most overrated player of modern times.

A very good crosser of the ball and (from a certain distance/angle) a good free-kick specialist.

But there have been players for England who are more worthy of legendary status (Keegan, Beardsley, Hoddle, Gascoigne to name but four players in my lifetime) than right-sided midfielder who shirks the tackle (one famous cop-out led to Rivaldo's equaliser in the 2002 World Cup).

In my opinion, he's not had a decent game for England since Greece in 2001. Too often has he been posted missing yet was still indulged by Eriksson who lacked the conviction to drop him when on many an occasion, it was merited. In the major tournaments he has played in for England, his lows outnumber any highs - anonymous in most of his matches which he would occasionally marr by a stupid sending off or a penalty that is still orbiting Jupiter. A penalty against Argentina or free-kicks against Colombia or Ecuador don't really go far enough to secure legardary status for me.

Dragging your nation to trophy success or even on the brink of it (using both genius and guts) is minimal qualification in my book. Maradona, Platini, Baggio, Zidane, Cruyff are four such examples. Sure they all had their bad boy moments but their deeds compared to Beckham would be like comparing Mohammad Ali to Richard Dunn.

Totally agree with you on this one

anyone who witnessed his performance for england against greece where he single-handedly won the game for them with guts, skill, passion and a fantastic last-minute free kick cannot tell me he was anything other than a great player!

bear in mind he never had pace so only awareness and tremendous technical ability kept him on top.

just imagine how many goals even our diddy forward line would score with the quality of delivery beckham would give!

but then again to play for the two biggest clubs in the world and win 100 caps for your country is insufficient to allow small-minded people to afford the guy maximum admiration!!

good luck to him, congrats when the honour arrives. (wish he was a jambo)

England actually drew that game in 2001 but it was his last truly great performance for them.

If you go onto youtube and dig out footage of France's 1984 Euro triumph, you'll find it was largely due to Platini pulling the irons out of the fire game after game. Same with Maradona in 1986. No doubt Roberto Baggio would've done the same had his hamstring not failed him on the eve of the final in 1994.

Great though that Greece performance was, it was a mere drop in a tea-cup given what real greats of the game have done.

and what did real madrid win in the 4 years he was there ? or England win with the golden generation ?

Its modern Britain and media hype. History is soon forgotten. Thats why people compare Ronaldo to Best and Beckham to Bobby Moore. Its pathetic.

I'm sure he won the league with Real? And a cup maybe.

A great player. Hope he gets his 100th cap and grabs a free kick winner over the French to celebrate.

Unfair to say he is overrated, he was runner-up twice for World player of the year. You only have to look at all the titles he won with Man U as well.

He won a La Liga in his last season in Madrid. Won league titles aplenty with the Mancs but I'm sure the likes of Schmeichel, Cantona, Scholes, Giggs, Sheringham, Solksjaer et al all had significant (in some cases more influential) roles in those victories.

If he had been a)Ugly as sin or B) Another nationality there would be little or no discussion on this Media whore.

Good crosser though.

Very good player, who had one of the best right foots of the last decade or 2

His crossing and set pieces were exceptional, and even when he didn't perform at 06, he still had more assists and goals than the overrated centre mids

He wasn't the most skillful or pacey, which is why I think he should have been played as a defensive midfielder in the Pirlo role.

His performance against Greece was unbelievable, and although I was gutted they actually qualified, I have to admit it is one of the greatest individual performances of recent times

Most of the comments on Beckham are positive, with a few cheap shots and bizarre comments about his lack of ability.

But to be honest, he's had a career that has been punctuated with off-the-field criticism, a kick at Diego Simeone that was massively blown out of proportion, and numerous other obstacles. Yet he is on the verge of a 99th cap, has had a MASSIVELY successful career at Man Utd & at Real Madrid, and almost all England fans still love him.

Nuff said.....

He already could have had his 100th cap but decided he was so clever he would get deliberately booked to miss a trip to Azerbaijan. Think he was quoted as saying afterwards 'some players are not as clever as me'.

Decent player but sorry whilst highly succesful at Man U, i would doubt there have been too many players been 1st team regulars at Madrid and only have one medal in four years.

and that tells you what?? surely that says more about the TEAM than about the PLAYER. and going on that logic, Ronaldo is a poor player?!

For the past few years --yes. Like many of the Gallacticos money became the main focus. Similar to what is happening at Barca this season.

Does not distract from the fact he could have already had 100 caps but was a smart-arse. The sad fact is at present he is playing in a substandard league chasing money he willl never need because he knows he can no longer cut it at the top level.

He has played the media to get a sympathy cap.

Granted, Beckham has moved to a crap league where he is picking up money he does not require. But it was Cappello's decision to let him go to that league, and he is the one who has re-called him to the squad.

Many may take the view that he is simply being offered the chance to complete a century of caps and retire, but Capello has no emotional attachment to either Beckham OR England, and therefore has no logical reason to be nostalgic/sentimental towards Beckham.

He is easily still capable of playing football at any level IMO
