For the past 3 weeks have been having connection problems with broadband, phoned then last week and they confirmed that there was a fault in my area (EH14) and it should be fixed within 5 days.

Tonight the g/f wqas tryin to make a skype phone call but again we kept losing th econnection.

Phoned Virgin and they told me I had exceeded my download usuage and had been throttled back by 75%!! Now I have been online for a couple of hours since coming back from the match no way have I been doing anything that could be described as excessive downloading so asked to speak to a supervisor.

She confirmed that I had been using to much bandwidth BUT would compensate me by ?10 for my inconvenience!!!

Now to me that suggests they are talking pesh regarding my downloading (I maybe download a film once a week)unfortunately I ended the call rather abruptly as they were not listening or willing to consider what I was telling them.

Surely even if they throttle my speed I should still have continuity of supply?

In the development I live in Sky isn't an option but I could switch to BT are they any better?

Am considering going into the Gyle tomorrow to speak to someone face to face....

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a wireless connection? Is the network secured with a password? If not, one of your neighbours might be accessing the net via your wireless.

Either that or your girlfriend is watching rakes of porn while you are at the game.

No point in going to the gyle, I wanted to up my package and thought I would be able to negotiate a deal but all they do in the shop is put you on the phone to customer services in India.

The shop staff can only do deals for new customers.

If your ISP has advisd you that you have exceeded your download allocation I would image that is the case although does not explain your outages.

You need to look at the small print of your Broadband package to establish what the rules are for 'fair usage'. I would imagine your WIreless config page may provide some stats on usage/up time etc for further analysis. You should also be able to get further info from Virgin.

I am with BT and I once recieved a warning letter for exceeding 80Gb download over the period of a month and if it continued my connection would be throttled for a set period of time.

Sounds like they have completely bullshitted you. No way they would try to compensate you if you had went over your allowance. What package are you on ? As you said though even if you were being throttled you should not lose your connection. IMO Virgin have been going down hill for a number of years and was the reason I left. Where about in in EH14 are you as I am in that area and get a very stable connection from BT. Don't listen to people who say BT is slow because with ADSL every home is different.

I'm in New Mart, just off Chesser Avenue near Asda.

I will be back in touch with them today regarding the loss of connection.

Virgin media throttle on big downloaders - but even then you still get a decent connection.

I have Virgin media 10mb and I download lots of TV shows, games from Steam and other heavy bandwidth activities.

I get throttled every so often but the internet is still useable.

Just in case they are throttling you (i doubt it) do the following:

- Change your wireless network password

- Consider changing your wireless network channel

- Check you don't have utorrent running and delete any finished downloads (similarly any other filesharing programs

In general it's always good to:

- Reboot your virgin media modem

- Reboot your router

You could always ask them for a replacement modem (I know Virgin were replacing a lot of old ones last year)

With Virgin i've found a much more consistent connection speed to ADSL.

I've had ADSL in two different areas EH11 and EH6 and it made Virgin Broadband seem like light speed.

Between midnight and 6am - I could get connections of 10mb but any other time it was 1mb if I was lucky.

From the bold text above you will see I aint an advert for the techno guy of the year award

I will ask them about the modem because as your post says even if I was being throttled, continuity of supply should remain.

Thanks to all who responded.

Another thing to check is whether your wireless is using WEP or WPA2 encryption. If it is WEP change it to WPA2 with 128bit encryption.

WEP is about as secure as having a door made out of rice paper.

Single click on the wireless icon at the bottom right of your screen, right click on your connection and select properties You will be able to see the security type you are using.

If it says WPA you should be ok, if it says WEP you need to log into your wireless router, using either the software that comes with it or the ip address for the router (Linksys tend to use 192.168.1.1 and Neatgear tend to use 192.168.0.1) and change it on the security tab. The username and password for the router tend to be Admin, Admin, unless you have changed it. Once you have changed the security type change the router username and password too.

You can change the network channel you are using whilst you are in the router, the defualt tends to be 11, but if there are multiple wireless networks in your location that can cause interference. If you have a smart phone down load a wifi sniffer (I use WiFi Analyser on my Android), it will tell you the channels being used around you. Pick either a channel that isn't being used by the other networks or one with the lowest use. Keep your channel at least 3 channels apart from others, ie if others are using channel 11 pick channel 8 or lower.

I had the same problem with VM last year, for weeks on end my connection would either drop or would go very slow (was on 20MB and I was getting 10-20k).

After weeks going through there Indian call centre and getting fobbed off with the same old excuses and them forever wanting to clear my cache etc I took my complaint to the Chief Exec. (Neil Barkett) who replied almost instantly (emailed him at 10PM had reply by 10.15PM) and was very apologetic and stated he would get something done.

For the next couple off weeks almost every night I had the Network Manager from VM round the house or in the cabinet on the street trying to determine the problem.

To cut a long story short in the end it transpired that some of there equipment was faulty and needed replaced.

Since this has been fixed I have not had any further problems.

I'm just glad I went through the Chief Exec as would have go nowhere near getting the problem fixed going through the call centre.
