Guess The Crowd
Basking in the enjoyment of last night's results in Ayrshire, I flicked on to Sky Sports 2 last night which was showing an old Dickie Davies interview with Nat Lofthouse, the England centre-forward from the 50s who died at the weekend. Fascinating it was too - despite being obviously a great player, he just came across as the nicest, most modest bloke you could ever meet. It's being repeated at 9 this morning - well worth watching (or recording). Any (very) old kickbackers out there who remember him play? (Well before my time, I hasten to add). His heyday coincided with what would have been a great time to be a Hearts fan.
The Vulture
When Harry Gregg came to visit him in his pub in Bolton, he ordered his drink and Nat said to Harry 'Don't worry, we don't charge keepers here'
Ben Dover
Sadly a relic ( no offence intended ) of a bygone era ! Only ever wanted to play for his hometown team Todays football players are puffs - FACT Maybe KK apart as he looks to be made of the same stone that the likes of Nat were hewn from
jambos are go!
He was a lot more physical than KK but you were allowed to physically challenge goalkeepers then particularly with a shoulder charge. And a shoulder charge in those days was not shoulder to shoulder. You could shoulder charge a keeper (or any player) in the chest and say knock them over the line. That's what Jimmy Wardhaugh did to the Celtic keeper Hunter in a famous match in the late 50s and the referee gave it to great outrage. Looking back it was indefensible but it really took European football for it to be outlawed. Rangers had a massive South African called Don Kitchenbrand who specialised in that. So did QOTS I think. Did Lofthouse not seriously injure a keeper in an FA Cup final with what was then a fair challenge. Harry Gregg?
Westcliff
I think it was Peter McParland of Aston Villa who trashed the Man Utd goalie in the 1957 cup final.

Ally Alexander
I think it was Peter McParland of Aston Villa who trashed the Man Utd goalie in the 1957 cup final. Lofthouse certainly "shoulder-charged " Harry Gregg into the net in the 1958 cup-final. He admitted after seeing a reply of the incident that the goal should not have stood as Gregg was still in the air when he made contact.
