"The supporters couldn't care a toss"

"In the end the supporters couldn't care a toss who the chairmen is or who the directors are. They want players, players that they can support"

Wallace Mercer speaking in the late 80's video "Back from the Brink"

I was watching this video again this evening. Wallace Mercer makes this quote when recalling the reaction from supporters towards him during a first division match against Clydebank in September 1981 shortly after he had spent ?800,000 on the club (including ?300,000 that he didn't have and placing his house as security on the investment).

Based on the wide range of subjects regularly debated on kickback concerning finances, board structure, owners, chairmen, planning applications, share ownership, world banking markets, and so on and so on...

Is it even possible now to go back to the idea that supporters just want "players, players that they can support", or has modern football evolved too much from this simplistic view?

Or, in other words, if we had a team on the park deemed "worthy" of our support would our interest in the leadership and business affairs of the club disappear?

A view that i think just about everyone on kick back would agree with no matter if they are a hatkicker or sheep, we want players we can believe in, people on the pitch who would do what the supporters all dream of from when they were young playing for the club we love and giving 200%.

Mercer was right on this!!!

wallace mercer was bang on the money with that statement

all we want as a support are players who play for the jersey, play for the club, play for the support and take pride in their performances, those that you know hurt like we do at a loss!

and a true sense of pride for the club we support

Charlie-Brown

Partly due to circumstances forced upon him when he took control of Hearts and partly because of the club's near death experience and Mercer's lack of huge personal wealth...Hearts were actually run much more financially efficiently during Mercer's 12-13 years at the helm - we didn't win anything however we finished 2nd in the SPL 3 times in 7 seasons something which we hadn't achieved in 20 years before & only achieved once almost 15 years since and during that time we home produced / signed players that most of us thirty plus age fans still remember with extreme fondness & regard - No More Heroes 'heroes' mostly all played in this era and are long since retired.....even 'Faither' ;)
