Parenting Dilemma

So....

Your kid is in Primary 1, and you want to go away for Summer this year....

Dilemma is...do you take them out school for 2 weeks at the start of June, returning so they get the last 2 weeks before they break up properly, or, wait until the start of the holidays in July and suffer the ridiculous price hikes associated with the school summer holidays ?

A dilemma indeed.

Education is more important, plus thought the councils were clamping down on taking kids out of school for holidays ? Plus July will be hotter :)

I used to take mine out for the last week Dexter. That used to make a hell of a differences to prices.

I agree with the other poster about education being important but I feel in P1, 2 or 3 the last week wont make a lot of difference.

So just do it. :mw_rolleyes:

Do it.

At that age they learn as much from the experience of going on holiday than they would in the classroom anyway.

Add this into the mix however...

The Mother in Law is a former Head Teacher for the Primary School

I'm pretty much decided - in P1 they surely cant learn much in the last month of school...had it been P2,P3 upwards, that's different.

Do/Did you tell the school or not ?

Tell the school - shouldn't be a problem

P1 is mostly play anyway and last week before the holidays is usually pretty relaxed

Holiday prices during school holidays must be the world's biggest ripoff

Told the school, and took the youngster out of P2 for a weeks holiday last autumn. In a discussion with his teacher on a seperate matter a bit later, it was cast up, definitely in order to make us feel guilty about doing so. We didn't appreciate that one little bit believe me. Think we're now on some kind of "irresponsible parent black list".

To the point though, there is nothing in the P1 currciulum that is of such pressing importance that a week or two will make any difference. As long as the school is informed, then to hell with their reaction.

Dexter, you clearly know you shouldnt do it as otherwise you wouldnt start this thread

I'd maybe say it would be worth the extra as when you do go it would be busier and your kid would get the benefit of socialising with far more kids which is a vital part of their development as is school

If you do take her out early, I doubt it would make much difference though to their long term development

Yes we told the school asking permission which they never gave. But did write to acknowledge the kids would be out of school. That was the end of it.

I also done it two years ago from P7 and S2. But that was my mistake as kids were at school in Fife and they finished a week later than Edinburgh. Again schools accepted it.

Oh, mercy!!!

I'm actually sitting here chuckling at the response I'd predict from the poster whom I can't remember....

The first two words of the response being..." Get it ...... " (last word rhymes with jumped )

Anyhoo, if you're heading abroad, I'd say go for it (and I'm a teacher!!) as the experience would be worth more than a coupla weeks in P1 - assuming you'll be doing educational things....practising the lingo, learning foreign currency, culture, geography etc.

Of Course...

The fact that Euro 2008 falls in those 2 weeks, has absolutely NOTHING to do with it...

All true.

I'm sure Mr and Mrs Dexter will not be on a lager binge in the sun, disgracing their country by vomming up on foreign boulevards.

Well probably not :D

Don't know if I am a good example, but we always used to go on hols during schooltime! My father did not have the money to take us during the school hols. It was go during or not at all.

Glad he went during.

I don't think it disrupted my schooling to any extent.

As my wife is a teacher it's never been an issue for us as we have to go during the school hols. It does cost a lot more.

However, her views on your dilemma are similar to your mother in law's. :)

What is a kid going to learn in 1 or 2 weeks in primary 1 that is so vital to their development?

Save the cash and go on the holiday.

I would say 2 maximum.

3 might be taking the **** a little.

I doubt when the kids go back their little friends will be writing HTML, solving calculus problems and speaking Japanese fluently, all learned in the fortnight they spent chilling in Tenerife or whatever.

No. but they could be behind on their reading or sums. Personally, and don't tell her inside, I think missing the last week at school is less risky than in the middle of a term as the teachers are winding down then as well.

Technically it is breaking the law though. ;)

I'm sure they'll catch up.

Especially if it is only the last week.

Is it really against the law? Maybe not such a great idea to take 2 weeks then. What about Deek's suggestion of just the last week Dex?

The thing is, it's far more than "just a few quid" we're talking about here. The prices shoot up by ridiculous amounts the minute the school holidays begin - that's even supposing you can actually get booked!

I've always been against taking my kids out of school during term time - jeez, I don't even let them stay off school unless they're half-dead - but for some people, it can mean the difference between going on holiday at all. What gets me though, is that some people regularly take their kids out of school even several times a year, without anyone saying anything, yet others, who do it once during their kids' whole school careers, are made to feel guilty.

go for it - the only thing i learned in P1 was how to tie my shoe laces.

And i still cant.

I cant lace shoes  Can tie them if someone has put laces in..

My eldest son is going to school in August and we're going to Center Parcs in May as we have done for the last three years. We are a low income family and four days outwith peak times is the most we can afford. I am disappointed that the education system is now guilting parents like us to take our kids away during expensive peak periods particularly as we now have two kids to pay for. Reading this thread has made me think about rebelling and taking my son out of school for a week in June next year, that's about as close as I'll get to living dangerously these days!

Take them out of school, thats what we are doing my Daughter is in P7 and we fly out to Majorca on 14th June, her last two weeks of primary school!! By going 2 weeks early we are saving ?900!!!!

When my daughter was in P1, we were going away for the September weekend to Disneyland Paris, however, it meant taking her out of school for the Thursday & Friday and at that time, she was only in school for a couple of hours a day.

Anyway, we put a letter into the school explaining that she would not be attending on theses 2 days due to our trip. We heard nothing until about 2 weeks after we had been when we received a letter from the school saying her holiday was not authorised and her name is now blacklisted on the system.

Personally, I wouldn't take my kids out of school during term time again but as she was only P1 at the time and hadn't been there for any length of time, I didn't see any harm in doing it. It is about time these travel companies brought their prices down to make it more economical for families to go on holiday outwith the school term.

Speaking as someone who can vaguely remember Primary school, you should them out. I'd only consider not taking them out if he/she was in secondary.

In Primary school you do nothing for the last month or so anyway.

Why should the majority of the class suffer because the teacher is having to go back and re-cover missed course work?
