Arvydas Novikovas & His Motm Performance Against Elgin

Have to admit that I was a little surprised not to find a thread dedicated to Arvy on the Terrace this morning (unless I'm being blind and just haven't spotted it) so decided that after being a little hard on him during discussions had here over the summer I should make the effort to give credit where it's due.

While I'm perfectly well aware that we can't attach massive amounts of importance to things that happen in a game against opposition like Elgin, last night really did change my mind about young Arvy. I liked him enough, thought he worked hard etc but I'd never been convinced that he really 'had it' until last night I finally saw some wee flashes of this star-in-the-making that other people have been talking about for months. He even managed to contribute to the rapidly growing 2010-11 sexy goal collection.

Great move from JJ playing him from the start too. He needed a game like that during which he could try out all his wee tricks and flicks and have a decent number of moves come off for him, he needed to see how capable he is of pretty much taking the pee out of anyone who can't match his feet for quickness, he needed a game under his belt, he needed a confidence boost, he needed to get a goal. He got all of those things and I was absolutely delighted when they announced that he was MotM, it capped off what was probably a very satisfying night for both him and for our manager. You could literally see his confidence growing as the game went on and hopefully it might have been just the tonic that he needs to kick on and put in a gutsier, stronger and braver performance against more tricky opposition.

Well done Arvydas, I'm very much looking forward to seeing your progress this season.

I agree with the OP, but be careful not to put pressure on the lad by unreasonable expectations that he will produce that level of performance every week.

Great post mate.

Agreed.

Well posted, man.

My dad turned to me and said that he thought Arvy flattered to deceive about a second before he scored.

I laughed.

The Treasurer

He's always had the talent but this season he seems to have added a bit of strength and bite to his game.

Still think he has a lot more to come thumbsup.gif

I agree with every single word of that.

It's almost as if I said the exact same thing to you after the game?

Played well, as well as gliding past Elgin players at will he tracked back and nicked the ball back more than a few times too.

He won't have it as easy against quality opposition but he looked the part last night.

He lost possession at one point fairly early on and someone near me started giving him stick. "we'll get rid of you same as we got rid of Miko" was part of it. Seemed to satisfy him (fat, baseball capped cretin) and his moronic pals.

The goal and man of the match performance maybe shut them up a bit. However I suspect Novi will get a bit of that every time he plays because of the twin crimes of being both a winger/flair player and Lithuanian.

If only we could get rid of those "fans". Free transfers to Airdrie or something.

excellent thread, OP. and as I commented to you last night the bonus is, for the next few weeks at least, he will be able to safely walk the streets of Edinburgh without fear of getting a mouthful of Chow Mein sprayed into his face.

win.

Never seen an U19 game in years but much as we -as fans- trust the management team on all matters concerning the first team, I reckon we have to also trust the guys who see with their oiwn eyes, the young guns, JIG and reports from the coaches on the official site have been the grounding behind what I have seen of the laddie, backed up by his first team performances.

When I have seen the wee wrech he has been a very talented fitba player but... (JKB CLICHE coming yp) he has looked pretty soft and a bit of a sheeter when it comes to gettin' in about balls that need contested.

Csaba was chuckin these wee laddies in far too quickly as first teamers though for me to get a good read but at the back of my mind, I have always thought that we could do much better out of our laddies if we had a real Patriarchial-type figure in charge of their careers, rather than a selfish, not too experienced wanabee at the helm.

I look forward to us replacing our talented cash-cows with talented -just of the assembly line- recruits over the coming seasons as our debt drops, while our good Jambo management team puts out a competitive side each week.

Pfft. I think you'll find that I said it actually, you theme stealer... :)

And FootballFirst - I don't think the fans are likely to make these demands of Novikovas right now and that's no bad thing. It's quite obvious that he's lacking in confidence and experience and people seem pretty patient with him as a result of that. It's maybe just as well, he doesn't strike me as being capable of dealing with too much pressure, never mind a stadium full of grumpy, intolerant Jambos...

He really was quite effective cutting in from the right, and he has the ability to tackle and come away with the ball much more than you'd rightly expect from a winger. His first touch is quite brilliant - even from some of Black's more robust 'passes' he was killing the ball stone dead just where he wanted it.

The real bonus is that we have Driver, Suso, Templeton & Novi all competing for places in the team which allows real competition and covers us well for loss of form/injury.

I dont think we have a player who has more skill on the ball than Ardy. Took his goal well and tracks when reminded, which is fine as plenty on the park were letting him know when he wasnt working back.

Loads more to come but needs careful management which JJ, BB and GL are perfectly capable of.

Seems to have improved pacewise and certainly looks a much stronger player, just remember it was Elgin City we were playing, let's hope he can up his game against our own League teams.

The Comedian

There is one massive flaw to his game ATM.

He really needs to learn when to release the ball and when to hold onto it/ run with it.

He played well last night and scored a nice goal, he was also caught in possesion a few times and made some poor decisions.

The above should come with experience but that's what I see in him as it stands. Good player.

I remember hearing someone shouting after he first made the wrong decision with the ball, heard something about Miko but didn't realise it was that, that is a terrible thing to shout. After the annoyance from the crowd after that first mistake I was worried Novi's head was going to go down, but when he did something similar, racing back and doing a perfect diving tackle (the kind that you need to perfect with timing otherwise you can get sent off.) It was the way to show the fans that a) you are going to fight for the ball and B) if you make a mistake, you will rectafy it. It was a joy to see it.

redm, it was a great op. He is a player that I feel will do well this season. He has the confidence this season which I am sure JJ has been key with. I noticed this in the first game of the season, when he came on he was trying little tricks with the St Johnstone defence, something he did rarely last season. After the game yesterday his confidence will be even higher.

His goal was impressive, but the bit I thought was his best bit of the night was when he was at the right touch line in the second half, around the half-way line. He got surronded by about four Elgin players who he used both his skill and strength to hold them of for what must of been 20 seconds before releasing the ball to the free Stevenson who unfortunatly could not control the ball.

To me, he will be a better player and has more ability then Aiden McGeady, and we saw what happened with him (note: not suggesting that we will get almost ?10m for him.)

I've always been a big fan off wee Arvy just felt he lacked confidence most times. Was very happy to see the wee guy score last night and put in a good shift aswell. Here's to the first of money.

Excellent positive post. Personally, I thought he was great last night and his work rate was superb. If he lost the ball, he was straight in there getting it back and nearly every time he DID get the ball back.

Thought he was different class, played with his head up and showed as much composure, fight and determination as he did flair, only one capable to put his foot on the ball and control things, much looking forward to his future contributions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I'll be honest, I gave Novi quite a bit of stick while he was playing under Csaba.

To me he seems like a new player under JJ, so hats off.

Hope he keeps it up.

I'm going to start by saying that I know we have only gained 4 points against two of the weakest teams in the league, but...

I have to say that I am loving how well JJ is managing the squad. We seem to be blessed with a fair bit of raw talent down the wings. Novi and Temps look very promising indeed. Plus Driver coming back (it looks like we may even be able afford to have him drifting in and out this year). Then there is still Suso who, despite his slightly erratic form, seems to be able to do a job in a few key games. But what is key to our recent upturn is the fact that our footballers have been allowed to play for the first time in years.

Full backs are not going to like coming to Tynie this year. (Has one been sent off in both our league games this year?). If the full backs aren't happy then the centre backs will not be happy, especially with Big Kev putting the nut on them and Calum or Steven running around mental in the gaps. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that even Obua may do well when he is back available. - he won a lot of headers at the end of last season. If we need to put him in with Kyle or Calum I think we could still do OK. Especially as we have the best left back in the league and a raw right back who, on his day, can whip in a wicked ball from the other side.

We may still have issues in the middle of the park, we may find the flaws when we play better teams, but it is nice to not feel totally toxic about the direction the team is going for a while. :turned:

I know some changes have been made and some new personnel have appeared over the last few months but I'm still qutie amazed at the massive shift in confidence I have in our squad. January was a particularly low time, I was aware we had some players with potential but just couldn't see them realising it any time soon. That was one of the most frustrating things about Csaba's tenure I suppose.

We have an interesting mix of players available to us at the moment and the optimism comes from more than just the emergence of the more exciting players like Temps and Arvy. It's also about wee Robinson (cool as a cucumber, that one), Wallace, Jonsson, Kyle, Elliot & Elliot, Stevenson, Thommo, maybe even Suso and to some extent Obua....and of course, Mr Andy Driver. Plus a few others, of course. ;)

In short, there are lots of reasons to get a little bit excited and the best thing is that they're dotted about all over the park, some are old hands and some are new recruits. Actually, give it a few months and it'll be very interesting to see the average age of those who turn out for us this season and how it compares to other teams in the SPL. Exciting times.

It's interesting to see how people's opinions have changed over the past few weeks. After the Dunfermline game he was getting pelters on here because of his performance, a performance that was poor and got poorer because of the abuse he was getting from the Hearts "fans". It's good to see that at least some are willing to change their minds, unlike a certain poster who tends only to post on negative threads, who said that Novikovas would never be a professional footballer. I know he's been online today and is bound to have seen this thread but, surprise, surprise, nothing from him. A little bit of humble pie eating would do him good. I told him at the time that he knew nothing about football (in my opinion) and I'm pleased that Arvidas is now tending to prove me correct.
