Marmaris to be exact!

Has anyone been before? I'm thinking about going for a week in June. Would never have picked Turkey but the Travel agent recommends it highly.

Would it compare to Spain for a cheap break?

bit of a Sh**ehole to be honest, frightening 2 hour bus jouney from airport, mind you that was the best part of 13 years ago, so things may well have improved, I'll stick with Spain I think

Went to Turkey last year for the first time and loved it. We stayed in Icmeler - just along from Marmaris and I would highly recommend it. Marmaris however - went there for the day and wouldn't go back - very touristy and tacky. Turkey itself is great - the people are very friendly and helpful and eating out etc is cheap. You do get a bit of hassle from the shopkeepers, bar owners, stallholders etc, wanting you to eat there or buy their stuff, but if you just walk on or say no, they're fine. Take the banter in the spirit in which it is intended, and you'll have no problems. I found it far far nicer than Spain any day.

Oh, and the roads must have improved since bigwull was there - the journey from the airport was fine as far as we were concerned.

Love Turkey, love the Turks but Marmaris has little sense of Turkish identity.

Fine if what you want to do is sunbathe and drink though ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I'm slightly less keen now. I hear the beer is very cheap though! Would the bars be busy in June?

I want to avoid the 18-30 thing but obviously don't want to end up in an empty dive!

I've been to Bodrum in Turkey twice and it's fantastic. Great weather, great people and decent food. I didn't fancy Turkey before going but it's my favourite holiday country now. I've heard Marmaris is a different kettle of fish though.

Turkey from what I saw was good apart from the pestering guys.

We stayed in Icmeler 2 years ago, it's a great wee place. Just 10 minutes along the coast from Marmaris but much quieter. The waterfront was great, nice wee beach, good resturants/bars and there was a water-taxi to Marmaris (a great way to see along the coast) if you wanted a bit of a livelier scene.

Where we were staying was in a villa near the back of Icmeler, very very quiet, a couple of wee appartment/hotel things, a resturant and two shops was all that was there. The majority of the people around us were locals, indeed we were very near a mosque and you would see quite a lot of them heading for prayer. Contrary to what people have said we found the Turks to be very friendly and helpful. Most speak good English and are very polite. Yes there is the odd shopkeeper/restuarant owner who is pushy, but you'll find them mainly in Marmaris and it's just the same as in any major tourist resort.

We went on a couple of great boat-trips when we were there. The first, after stopping for a swim in the sea, took you out to Turtle Beach, where apparently turtles lay their eggs at certain times of year. You spend a bit of time there then head up on a riverboat to some mudbaths which were great fun. You then go all the way back again. Takes up a whole day and was brilliant.

The second one was ok as well, just a boat trip around the bay with a free bar (not so great towards the end when all the English are pished). It stops quite a few times for a swim in the sea and again at a beach somewhere.

There's loads more to do, a jeep safari, walks in the hills, whatever takes your fancy really.

I believe it's not as cheap as it was when we were there. It was 3 lira to the ?1 then, you were getting a beer for between 90p - ?1.10ish, I think it is now much closer to what you'd pay over here. Bit of advice on changing money, do it at one of the resturants. If you get chatting to the people there they are likely to give you a better rate than you would in one of the exchanges.

Oh and if you're missing home, head into Marmaris and a resturant called Aloha (it's just off the main drag somewhere), few Hearts shirts (donated by us) pinned to the ceiling and a brilliant Scottish breakfast including black pudding and tattie scones! :D

Actually, further to Jamboross's post, the hotel we stayed in in Icmeler had a Hearts shirt pinned up in the bar. Also, my son wore his Hearts tops while we were there, and on more than one occasion, bar staff recognised them and commented on it. One barman came running out of his bar when he saw my son and shouted "hey, the Gorgie boys are in town!" :)

I've only been to Turkey once and enjoyed it. We were in Icmeler as it was a last minute deal and we asked for the quietest place they could find us. Really nice town, great choice of restaurants and quiet bars.

Bloody hot though, we were there in July and to be honest it was a bit too hot for a true blue Scotsman like me. I never go below factor 16. Meanwhile Mrs Tazio was on the factor 2 by the second week.

The Turks can we a bit pushy in terms of selling etc but no better or worse than most countries in the Med that depend on tourist money. However they quickly back off once you express your disinterest in tacky gifts.

I imagine that it would be a lot worse in the big resorts.

I know the bar you're talking about I think, had the white and blue reebok one in it?

I stayed in Icmeler too and my HMFC tops were recognised as well. The barman at our hotel put money on us to beat Sparta away because of it. Poor guy.

We went accross to Kos also. The pestering guys are the only downside but my girlfriend didn't really get any hassle because she was always with me. To be fair if they're trying to get you into their shops they usually stop annoying you when you say your not interested.

I'm thinking about going early June. It's just with one other mate so we need to get the resort right, otherwise we might end up getting on each others nerves!

I asked a couple of girls at work about Turkey and they mentioned the pervy locals. At least I won't stand out much then...;) (Kidding ladies, I'm a perfect gent).

Fairly mixed bag of responses but I'm tempted for some reason. We got quoted for a 4star hotel, all inclusive (free booze) at ?340 each. I imagine there are deals similar to that on the net.

Is Marmaris more of a party type of resort?

Much appreciated guys.

I probably would.

When I was there all we were interested in was the sun and eating and drinking. Marmaris provides plenty of all 3. :)

The food was amazing, Think we ate in 10 different restaurants over the fortnight and we never had a bad meal. They were all superb.

Like anwhere the imported drinks cost a bomb, Budweiser was a fiver. Local beer (efes I think) was good, Maybe ?2 a pint.

Like I said I was there a few years ago and we found it quite pricey in comparison to many other places we have visited. I don't know if things have changed for the better since then.

Oh and as mentioned before, The bus ride from the airport is a bit of a trek.

I try and get over to Turkey twice a year to a resort called Altinkum.I've been going there for the last 15 years. I really like it as it is a break away from it all.Don't worry about the people pestering you to have a drink or meal, just say no thank you or maybe later and that should be suffice. If they do persist however, then tell them you have said maybe later and walk on.

Beer in Altinkum is just over a pound and i'd imagine it would be slightly dearer in Maramaris as it is more commercialised. There's a huge bazaar in Marmaris and from what I've heard it is excellent for fake stuff like jeans,t-shirts etc which are of very good quality.

Get yourself on a boat trip around the bays in a gulet as you pay about ?12-?15 and you get your drinks free all day!! :rolleyes:The Turks do like manners and are very friendly.

In my reckoning you'll enjoy it and try some real Turkish food as I love it!!:P

If you want to get bevvied up go to one of the big resorts, they aint the real Turkey though and the beer is more expensive with lots of greaseballs floationg about trying to pull. I got engaged in Altinkum which is touristy but not to bad. My favorite place in Turkey is Olu Deniz, would be fine for a week away. Me and the wife are going for 2 weeks in June, flights 120 rtn each with a room for 2 weeks another 200 quid ! beers a quid. Superb

I don't know about other resorts but in Altinkum the local council can close down bars for a few days as punishment if they get too many complaints from people getting hassled. There is virtually no problem there now. As Fener says, just say no thanks.

See you in The Swan for a JTs match in Sept.

Was in Kusadasi last year on an All Inclusive and we had a great time. Looking to go back again next year.

The only downside was it was a 2 hour bus journey to the hotel from the airport but it wasn't as bad as what we were expecting.
