During the performance, one of the most touching and profound segments is a bit about Carlos Mencia going to Six Flags and waiting for hours to get a ride on one of the roller coasters. He complains about his legs being tired and cramping up from standing so long, waiting for his turn to get on the ride. Things that happen to many of us in the course of our lives, so we can easily sympathize. The story gets hilarious and insightful at the same time when he describes looking at the coaster as he gets to the front of the line, seeing one empty seat, and then being told to 'hold up.' Hold up?! What are you talking about -- there's a seat left, it's my turn is the thought (and comment from Mencia during his telling of the story). At that point, the ride operators open a little gate and start to let in someone in a wheel chair, much to the chagrin of Mencia. The story he tells of harrassing the poor guy in the wheel chair is far from politically correct, and yet perhaps it should be considered absolutely correct. Mencia uses that story to talk about seeing the person in the wheelchair as a person, and how simply being in the wheel chair and being 'differently abled' (or handicapped) shouldn't mean that someone should expect or even accept favorable treatment. If a person wants to be treated equally, then that should be the case, but equal treatment does not mean you take advantage of special breaks along the way. Mencia's comment and point is that you have to choose one or the other - special treatment because you are different and need and want assistance, or treatment just like anyone else. Each comes with it's own consequences though. If you are treated differently, then expect people to stare or whisper, or look away or feel pity. Those are events and emotions that bound to happen and anyone that uses their status as a differently abled individual should expect those reactions and not be entitled to being upset or indignant about them. On the other hand, if someone that is differently abled is treated like everyone else, and seen as a whole person, they forfeit the right to cutting in lines, and to expectations of reserved parking spaces close to businesses, or other benefits granted to them by the designated status. I read in a newspaper a couple of weeks ago about some MP or otherwise worthy who has been writing to the EHRC on this point. Unfortunately I can't remember his name . He asked why it was racist for the BNP to not admit non-whites but not racist for a police union for blacks only. He's also been tying up the EHRC with loads of other similar questions about 'blacks only' organisations some of which they've refused to answer. To set the record straight Police Officers are not allowed to be members of a Union, however there is a Black Police Officers Association, setup for the reason that the Black Police Officers experienced completely different issues that their white counterparts did, also it gave them more affinity and understanding to the local communities that they served. They do not only look at equality solely for Black Police Officers but for every police officer and yes everyone is welcome. However, if everyone on the site is looking for a black partner, you might not have much luck unless you are black. It's not racist to have a preconcieved idea of who your ideal partner is, whether it be in the form of what they look like or other things liinked to race, such as an ability to cook in a traditional style. The likely reason there's not a dating site for white's only is that most mainstream dating sites will be majority white anyway. There won't be any difficulty in finding white people on the site (getting them to speak to you might be an other issue). Because of this, there won't likely be sufficient demand to make a profit or for the site to have enough members to work. It works both ways, for similar reasons, that's why christmas and easter are so over commercialised while Eid ulFitr, Eid al-Adha and Hanukkah aren't. I don't have a problem with differentiators as long as they are not used in a derogatory manner. In fact I believe all our lives are enhanced by the various differnet cultures, religions etc. I lived 9 years in SE Asia where multicultularism thrives and its the differences between the ethnic groups which make them all stronger as they live together. The problems arise when one group tries to impose its culture on another. So I have no problem with blacks only dating or a black police association as long as they are not too quick to play the "race card" when things don't go their way. That I do object to.
