Larry
Anyone know how to solve this problem? A few days ago I went to shut down my computer, So I went to the start menu and the wee red shutdown button had the little yellow updates bit on it. So It obviously installed the updates before shutting down, It took the best part of 25minutes to do this whereas it usually only takes 5-10 at most. Then the next time I try and start the computer there is some fault, and Instead of starting up it goes to a "Tech guys" screen telling me windows failed to start and then i get several options on what to do, the options include restoring the computer to a previous date, and using an automatic fault finder to find and fix the problem. I chose the latter option and after 10minutes or so, It says its fixed and restart the computer. It appeared to have worked. I use my computer and shut it down. No problems. Then the next day I am using it again, and once again when I go to shut it down there is the updates icon over the ****down button. And once again, it takes 25minutes to configure the updates beofore shutting down, and again When I go to restart the computer it fails and I need to do the whole tech guys process. Ive tried the other option of restoring the computer to previous settings to a date months ago, but again by the end of the day I get the automatic update and then it happens over again. Its doing my head in, On the desktop I have an option of shutting down without installing updates, but I don't seem to be able to do this on the laptop? Any ideas of how to fix this problem? Is there a way to stop automatic updates? IS this advisable? cheers
heartsfc_fan
Go onto control panel then there should be an option for "Automatic Updates" Double click it and you will get a box where you will have the option to turn it off. Probably not the best thing to do, but it might work if you turn it off for 2 or 3 days then re-install that update that seems to be ****ing things up might actually "work". You've got a strange issue though. Never seen that one before. Sorry, pretty p*ss poor advice from me there!

At least I don't have to **** about for half an hour everytime I want to get on the computer now. It is a strange one, If it is just the update itself that is somehow messed up then I assume after a certain period of time a new update will replace this one. I dunno, im crap with computers. Larry
Also, this problem isnt occuring right now as obviously Ive got updates switched off untill I can work it out. So I can only assume the updates that are installed right now are fine, But Its the new update that causes the problem whenever its tried to install that? shaun.lawson
As a precaution bringbackjefferies, I think you should run a virus scan and download malwarebytes if you haven't already got it. My first thought when seeing this thread was it could be a virus masquerading as Windows Update: that's a total guess on my part though.

Larry
you have tried system restore mate. Aye, this is one of the options you get from the tech guys page when it fails to start up. It restores to a date a month or two before this problem occured, But then By 3am of the next day(the time my computer is set to install any updates) there is an update to install and it happens allover. And so far the only way passed the problem is by turning updates off, which isnt advised apparently. Malware did a scan of over 90K items and nothing malicious found, going to start a virus scan now and see. Thanks for the ideas people

Once you've done this, you need to find out which update(s) is/are causing the problem (Control Panel->Windows Update->View update history->Right click on failed update->View details). Post this info here, along with your computer make and model.

redjambo
Its got the copy right bit, and then the upgrade windows vista link. But nthing inbetween Ok, no problem. Everything seems to have kicked off with the fact that there was a problem in installing Service Pack 1 (although I have no idea why your PC is only trying to install this now). Most of the other errors are due to this faulty update. My advice would be to manually download and install SP1 (in case the original was corrupted in some way). You can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en (it's 430Mb so will take a while; save it to disk and then run it from your PC after it has all downloaded). I would give Melbourne Jambo's solution a go then - it's a way of solving a problem that sometimes causes errors on updates. You never know, that might work. redjambo
I could try several things BBJ but perhaps you ought to talk to the experts. Microsoft appear to be offering free email support for Vista SP1 (and I assume that also includes its installation) until 26 February 2010. See https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-gb&prid=11274&gprid=500921&st=1 . I would recommend giving this a go. If you fancy taking the factory restore option, and can't find that booklet I mentioned, have a look at http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/9117.htm under the section "Hard Drive Recovery". It's not guaranteed however that if you do this and then try to re-install SP1 that you won't get the same problems (it could be a hardware problem).
