Stumbled over this rather interesting looking website.

 

Google "mad bid" and it's the first result.

You only win the item if you are the last person to increase the bid by 1p. So, say if an item was on ?20.13 and you bid ?20.14 and didn't win, you would still have to pay the ?20.14 even although you didn't get anything.

i think it costs you to bid,roughly a ?1 a bid.

 

Yeah, that's it. Not used one of these sites myself, but that's how it works. Each bid is bought pre auction as a credit, they cost about ?1 to ?1.50 each. Each time a bid is made the timer resets and if another bid is made it resets again. No bids made until the timer runs out and the winnergets the item at auction price. I would imagine it's very hard to win.
