since.1902
But no club sacrificed more in WWI then a star-studded Heart of Midlothian side which topped the Scottish League in 1914. To set an example to fans, 16 players enrolled. The club bore a heavy toll - with seven never returning home. Current skipper Michael Stewart said: "We look upon football and winning championships and cups as the be all and end all. "All those guys who were on the cusp of something great, something special decided to put that to one side and give it up, because they felt the war in Europe was more important. "That really hits home and gives you an idea of what those guys must have been going through."
Tazio
Whatever your opinion of Mikey Stewart on a pitch he continues to be an excellent spokesman and an unusually eloquent footballer in interviews. Good article.
