IronJambo
i'm just about to pick up a new laptop and want to make sure its protected as best as it can be. i'm not paying for something like norton/mcafee though. planning on putting avast anti-virus on it, but don't have a clue as to firewalls or anything. can anyone recommend stuff? laptop will have windows 7, does it have reasonable protection out of the box anyway? cheers

Sheriff Fatman
If you are connecting via a wireless router don't bother with a firewall, (your router acts as a hardware firewall) if you are connecting directly via a modem use something like zone alarm or comodo.
