anyone see the way he dealt with the Wigan player who almost elbowed him in the heid? he just dragged him away from Vidic and didn't book him.

can anyone ever see a scottish ref ever doing that, especially versus one of the big teams?

Zaliukas would have got a 35 game ban.

imagine iain brines or stuart dougal in that situation. just imagine the furious outrage in the media up here after the referee had sent off the player and reported him to the SFA for serious misconduct.

in the grown up world of english football - ref defuses the situation, pundits say well done and well handled.

It always makes me giggle when English football is seen as 'grown up' on here - because it bloody isn't, and most of our refs are embarrassing! It's a perspective thing though: in the excellent When Pele Broke Our Hearts about the Wales 1958 World Cup quarter-finalists, one of the players interviewed reminisced about how chaotic their preparations were:

"You've got to say England do things tidy - but with Wales, it's a complete shambles".

If only he was right about us!

Had it happened in Scotland you'd have had:

  • the player red carded

  • jim traynors show going into mass hysteria

  • ewen cameron having a w**k up the walls of the real radio studios

  • 3 days of 2 page coverage in our papers

  • the comittee increasing his ban to 6 games

.

english football officialdom might not be perfect but it's a smidge better than up here shaun.

the marx brothers and laurel & hardy would be better than what we have here.

The difference is that the English league is run by people with a clue. The refs are good and the pundits know what they're talking about and dont just want to make a name for themselves. Pundits here just want to rag on Hearts and kiss the @$$ of the OF.

Randle P McMurphy

To be honest I think Howard Webb will be hauled over the coals for it. Personally I thought it was a great piece of refereeing, using common sense to defuse the situation. However in the refereeing by numbers system we have now he will be disciplined for not following procedure by sending him off.

There are plenty bad refs in England as well as up here ffs if it had been Paul Alcock he would have dived to the ground clutching his face.
