John Findlay
In my sabbatical. Although away from Kickback I was not hiding from all things Scottish football. A) One thing that riled me greatly was when that pulitzer winning journalist Keith Jackson of the Daily Record wanted an investigation into UEFA and the way they allot referees for European qualifying games. Keith was most unhappy at the performance of the Spanish referee in the Scotland v Italy game. Mr Jackson was convinced that the referee was corrupt. This baffled me as the said Mr Jackson goes very quiet when the question is raised as to whether there are corrupt referees in the Scottish game. He is of the few that like McVicar they are whiter than white. My personal opinion of Mr Jackson is simple. He never puts an opinion in print until he has had it cleared by a certain Mr David Murray of Ibrox park/stadium. If there is a bigger Murray stool pidgeon in Scottish sports journalism then I have not read an article by them yet. Mr Jackson help clean up our own back garden first before you try to clean everyone elses. The death of Phil O'Donnell: A tragedy for the guy his family and friends. However once again I personally felt the the west driven Scottish media went over the top and the postponment of certain games was totally un-merited. Phil was a good honest pro not an outstanding footballer but he did play for one of the gruesome twosome so got far more column inches than he should have. If he had only ever played for Motherwell then the column inches would have been a lot less. I still think only lip service was paid to the club that produced the best memory to Phil. The Hearts v Motherwell programme for the Scottish Cup tie. C) Stevie Frail: Is he the man to take Hearts further. Personally the jury is still out for me. However I do believe he is taking a lot of un-merited stick and I believe he handled the situation with the alleged Hearts supporter spot-on yesterday. He was prepared to take the time after the game to speak personally with the guy. what's wrong with that. You really are damned if you do and damned if you dont. D) Rafael Benitez: A perfect example of how supporters have changed(for the worst in my opinion) over the years. Many are calling for his head because he has not won the premiership. The late great Bill Shankly never won any trophy between 1967-1972 but, if any Liverpool supporter had called for his sacking he/she would have been lynched. Quite rightly too.
