I've been out of work for 3 months and have a start with reliance on Monday.I also had a start with first bus at the end of March. But i Just got a phonecall they now have a start date for me 2 weeks on Monday. It was ideal the start date with the buses being at the end of march i could have spent a few months in the reliance job to see what it would be like.I have 5 weeeks training with Reliance and am going to be working in Edinburgh somewhere. The job with first bus is in Dalkeith (just down the road). Now the job with the buses is around 2 quid more a hour but there will be shift work involved. What do you reckon? Does anyone work with or has worked with either company?

I think it's time you stepped up to the plate and made a big boy decision without any input from JKB.

Or if you still live at home you could ask your Mum.

I think ATIS can get stuffed. This is one of the things the board is for, to see if anyone else has opinions or knowledge.

Ok, so I've not worked for either but I think the idea of getting as wide a range of experience as possible is a good thing. So go for Relieance now and then First Bus at the end of March. But - that said - if the buses are takign away their original offer and only giving you the new one as a take it or leave it - well, then you probably have to go for it, especially if its not for a fixed length of time.

Start the reliance job, if it's good stay and if not, go to the buses. I'd avoid shift work as far as possible, unless it was for substantially more money.

Cheers bud.Thing is ill only have 2 weeks with the reliance job so i won't really know what it is all about. The job with the buses they are putting me through my test to get my pcv licence so it would be a good thing to have.Got to weigh up if i want more money plus shift work or less money and a mon-fri.

Go for the buses. Reliance staff are pretty poorly paid. I know a couple of folk that have worked for Reliance, but they never lasted. Not fun being recognised when you're out by the *people* you'd be transporting about either..

Now I think definitely go for the buses. Getting them to pay for you to get your licence is definitely good, then you've got somethign you can take away if you ever leave.

And ?2 more an hour works out as another 3 and a half grand per year. Not to be sneezed at!

The People's Chimp

Reliance would be a nightmare. Guarding custody cells, transporting folk to the courts/prisons/detention centres? You might enjoy it, but ?2 an hour more, plus getting put through your licence would make the buses seem definitely more appealing....

I would go with the job with First Bus if i was you .I was offered a job with Reliance a few years ago and i didn,t like what they offered the money was crap and i didnt fancy the job of escorting neds to prison . I didnt know at the time i applied that was part of the job .So go with the buses you will get used to shift work and when you do its a dawdle

Never met anyone who was happy workin for Reliance. I'd go for the Bus job mate. More money, less chance of gettin filled in cos someone recognises you as the fud that wouldn't let em smoke or somethin.

A friend of mine was a bus driver and absolutely hated it. Having to deal with the moaning public all day was s**t and as someone who's worked shifts for the last 9 years, I'd love a 9-5 job Monday to Friday. At least I'd get to the footie more often.

From what I've seen the Reliance job isn't exactly hard work.

Working with the prisons, I'd strongly advise against a job with Reliance unless you want to be eaten by a convicted dog rapist.

PS - Don't go for Reliance... I used to work in an job where I saw quite a bit of them, more retarded morons its hard to find, and that's not considering the reprobates they transport (sorry facilitate escape for).

Got a mate or 3 who work for Reliance, they say it's the most soul-crushing ****e job in the history of existence. I also have a mate who drives the LRT buses, and he loves it.

Go for the buses.

For me a big factor in taking a job is the distance you have to travel in the mornings to get there. It can be the difference of an extra hour in yer bed!

Defo take that into account.

P.s i'd probably go for the bus job. Saying that i'd hate to drive a bus but a lot of people seem to like it and say the pay is good.

Hey, there's probably folk on here that care more than you give us credit for.

For what it's worth, I reckon you've made the right decision.

All the best for the bus tests.

I drive with lothian Buses mate take first bus job and then once you have the Psv and a bit of experince apply to lothian Buses. we get paid ?11 an hour from April this year (?10.45 just now) not bad. oh and the shifts are 7hours 48 mins after a spell on the single decks think first have 9 to 10 hour days and don't get paid for their breaks we are 7.48 clock on to clock off.

Down side is shifts and the standard of people you ferry around on buses is the same as on Reliance except on your reliance vehicle they are cuffed.

You can get hassle on the buses but if you just keep your gob shut and ignore the mayhem generally you will be ok.
