was trying to remember the last player we had who caused any anticipation or excitement when the ball was 25 yards out and i cannot recall one in the last 15 years or so. having a player like aguiar can be worth 5-10 goals a season at least, and can make all the difference as we saw yesterday. am i right or were there some decent set play players in the past?

More than 15 years ago now, I guess, but I always like Scott Crabbe's free kicks

I remember Colin Miller being dubbed a dead ball specialist after a certain goal against Rangers! Hartley's deliveries were always excellent, but he was no expert at getting it over the wall and down. Aguiar is the best dead ball player i can remember at Hearts in a long time.

Gav Aitchison

It was short-lived, but Valois used to be a good free-kick threat. Remember one in particular at Partick that he scored from miles out.

Freekicks like Aguiar whipped in yesterday are almot undefendable. So good to have someone that can deliver a ball like that. Worth his weight in gold, give the man a new contract NOW Vlad!

I remember Salvatore used to have a hard shot and was therefore placed on ** duty. Don't think it was very successful though!

Remember him away to Dunfermline and as he was the only outfield player not to have scored that season I remember Colin Cameron trapping the ball outside the box and rolling it to Salvatore who hit a sweet one into the top corner.

Not sure if it was a set piece but it was a great "dead ball" strike.

Eammon Bannon had a good dig, as did Ralphy Callachan. Busby was a bit hit and miss, and Winchester was all miss and no hit.

I will never forget Ralph's curler that finally decided the epic 3 game SC tie against Montrose in 76' :)

Anyway, yes .....free kick specialists ?

I think it is criminal, given the time these guys have to practice, that we never had several specialists who could each step up in different scenarios.

We are certainly better off now though with Driver and Bruno both good at finding the top corner. Sheesh, how it used to frustrate me when time after time we just had the big blooter straight at the defensive wall

I want to see Karapidis hitting a free kick, I remember him having a couple of shots last season and he can fairly hit a ball. In a Lorenzo Amaruso style I would reckon, either on target or row 30. Or maybe a bit Jorg Albertz.

Aguiar is different class at delivering set pieces, whether shots on goal or dangerous crosses.

His value cannot be underestimated in this respect.

In my time supporting Hearts we've never had anyone that would get you excited if we got a free kick within shooting range, but Bruno definitely does so, you feel something can happen when he has the ball set up for a delivery or a shot.

My favourite has to be Lope de Aguirre, who used to lash these free kicks in over the monkeys heads, right onto other bank of the Amazon.

Paul Hartley was decent from wide areas but the last real direct threat I can remember is Scott Crabbe.

Hartley scored 5 or 6 direct free kicks.

I recall him scoring at Tynie against Killie, Celtic (3-0 game for finishing 2nd), and at least one other (Dundee Utd IIRC). He also scored direct against the Hobos for the second against the Hobos at Hampden.

Think he scored other direct free kicks that I've missed, so he was a decent striker of a free-kick for us.

Aguiar's certainly the best we've had in a long time.

Over the past 5-10 years, we've had players who were supposed to be set piece specialists but who actually took about one good set piece in every ten. Much as I like Hartley, this is something that he was guilty of. Fulton too.

surely Skacel is being forgotten here. he had an outstanding delivery. hartley also whipped in a good ball but was mince at direct free kicks, not enough power.

Agreed, skacel could really hit a dead ball.

And maybe Besliga, for that delivery. :)

Agree with that.

In recent times I would say the best are:

1. Aguiar

2. Kingston

3. Hartley

You have to then go back to Scott Crabbe to find someone who could take a decent direct free kick.

The worst tactic was always the tap to the side for Severin to hammer into the wall.

I think this is the first Hearts team in a number of years who like they may have practised set pieces.
