Car Stereo Unit + Speakers - help!

Want to get a new system for the car. I'm clueless with tech stuff but the booklet for the stereo I have just now says the output is 4 x 20 watt, whatever that means. Anyhow, can you put new speakers in and not replace the existing stereo unit and still get good sound quality? or should you do the whole package for the best effect.

ideally I'd like to just buy a quality pair of speakers and keep the existing stereo unit but how would I know if the new speakers are compatible with the existing stereo unit?

cheers for any help folks!

Whilst it may improve it a little bit the stereo is important too.

If its an old manufacturers one your wasting your time and cash

think a trip to an car audio specialist is on the cards for some advice. It is an old manufacturers stereo unit so looks like I'll need to replace the lot to get top top quality sound. Funny thing is the car is ****e but I just like driving anythin as long as the tunes are nice and crisp!

Ther should be no problem just replacing the speakers. If you get better quality speakers the sound quality should be better.

The 4x20 watt means the max power output of your hifi is 20 watts into each of 4 speakers. So your new speakers should be rated at least for 20 watts each.

Talking to an expert is a good idea. They will be able to advise you on the best specifications for replacement speakers.

You could probably go cheaper on the speakers and put more on a Unit.

That doesnt look like too bad a package too me and if your spending that much fairly surely you will blag free fitting in store.

Yes the stuff could probably be found cheaper but you then have the hassle of fitting it yourself or finding someone to do it.
