Songs for my funeral

I P Knightley

I've got to suggest at least 3 songs for my funeral.

Don't know whether to go all mawkish and sentimental; to raise the roof with party/dancey songs or to go for a couple of funnies.

I'm tempted by "Burn, baby, burn; disco inferno" that may raise a smile or two.

For fun, I'm tempted to have a gay anthem or two, just to leave folk wondering.

If I want folk to be mopping their eyes, I'd go for "Song is Over" by The Who or, since I'm a father and I have sons, I could choose "Father & Son" by Cat Stevens.

Struggling here. Any suggestions?

Quick question, is there a reason for selecting them now?

Was thinking about this the other day.

Well meet again by Johnny Cash seems quite fitting.

My weepie would be Somewhere over the rainbow by Eva Cassidy.

Maybe not relavant but the acoustic version fo the Manics This is yesterday day always makes me think of funerals and death?

Just my thoughts from the other day, i do a lot of driving see....

I've just realised that I'm not immortal.

Nothing too dramatic, in all honesty. A few mates have got together to counter the "book clubs" that our wives all attend. Instead of choosing a book not to read and not to discuss over a bottle or seven of wine, we choose a musical theme and select 3 songs each in the theme & play and discuss them over a bottle or seven of wine, beer, pizza and smokes.

Unlike the wives' book clubs, we actually take the music element of it fairly seriously. But the booze and smoking are taken even more seriously.

Good one! It was playing on the radio when my second son was born, an event that was the end of a very long and hard road. God, I was a snivelling wreck.

the songs i would choose whould depend on how i was to die.

hit by lightning = thunderstruck

hit by a car = highway to hell

in my sleep = sandman by mettalica

coke overdose = white lines

top myself = theme from mash (suicide is painless?)

fairground ride induced death = helterskelter

drowning = take my breath away

i'll think of more later ;)

Mate of mine from Uni died on Ben Nevis a number of years ago - he was pretty mental when it came to mountaineering ...

Vocal excerpts from "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" at the funeral ... it was a tough one.

Good stuff, thought I had missed an earlier thread confirming a terminal illness or something

Either way, I would go for any of the following:

Always look on the bright side of life - Monty Python

I am the resurrection - Stone Roses

I wanna be adored - Stone Roses

Area Codes - Ludacris ;)

The Manics do a great version of that song. It was an early stand-alone single, but can be found on their Forever Delayed greatest hits album.

My calculations have made the assumption that Elton John won't re-work Candle in the Wind for me. If he does, then out of politeness, I would have to restrict the choice to 2 songs.

As an ex-pat, I'm tempted by Dougie MacLean's Caledonia. Or Frankie Miller's; I can't decide!!

You must have seen the other threads?

The bar for acceptance in the thread is set pretty high these days. Weird is good, isn't it?

great gig in the sky i think as people are coming in, since i've been a singer all my life, even though i rarely gig these days

oh happy day - edwyn hawkins choir can be the religious content of the afternoon

weepy - tough one, but maybe to where you are by josh grobin or going home by mary fahl

as i'm being cremated baby i'm burnin by dolly parton

for chits & giggles something like i lost my heart to a starship trooper, your disco needs you or some big campy number

and as people are leaving i can't decide really, i'll get back to y'all

Shouldn't you get into a studio and lay down a few tracks to be played at your own funeral.

Would do the same myself but I'd rather my family remembered me fondly than as some cruel torturer!

i have been in the studio and recorded 3 albums actually, mostly cover versions.

incidentally, at both my mum & my nans funeral a song of mine was played that they both loved. an original called endlessly.
