H.A.N.S
I watched five minutes or so today on bbc2. When the bowl stops why does the umpire(referee, official or whatever) spray the bowl at either side?

If it hits the jack.(the white thing). It's incase they go in the ditch they could still count as shots

When the bowl stops why does the umpire(referee, official or whatever) spray the bowl at either side? If a bowl touches the jack after being thrown and before it comes to rest, its "toucher" and marked with chalk. The bowl remains live if it is moved into the rear ditch. If it goes off the side it is a dead bowl and doesn't count. The marker chalks it, which on the TV is with spray chalk. The umpire is the one who comes on - when required - and measures whose bowl(s) is nearest to the jack
