I hate calling call centres It's along the lines of saying that breakfast cereals are good for you or that drinking Diet Coke will lead to you being surrounded by muscle-bound, half-naked men. Say it often enough and people will start to believe it, like the mod edit they are!

leginten
I'm amazed that no politician has ever picked up this issue and run with it. I'm amazed that telecoms regulators have done so little to protect the public. I'm amazed that we all accept calmly that we can be charged money for hanging on the line indefinitely listening to muzak or pre-recorded platitudes when we need to speak to someone. Is the situation as bad in other countries? How many days/weeks of the average person's life are now spent in phone queueing systems? How can this brigandage possibly be legal? I'm shaking here. Gershwin
The thing is...most of these companies have a direct local rate line but give you some overpriced 0845 number.

I think you will find that 0845 numbers are charged at local rate. It's the other numbers that are over priced.
