Northern Soul

I've got a fairly varied taste in music, I always felt that, playing in bands, it was the best thing to do. Listen to lots of different "genres" of music and learn more.

I enjoy a bit of Motown, 60's stuff, and was always called a "closet Mod" by a few of the guys in my old local.

I've always fancied listening to a bit of Northern Soul but don't really know where to begin. Anyone into this type of music able to give me some pointers or recommendations as to where to start??

I'm afraid that you are completely wrong on this one.

Ok, music is a subjective matter so you don't like it. Fair enough.

The concept is as ridiculous as the music.

Care to explain that? Or at least expand?

Movie coming out soon[soled Out i think its called]with Martin Compston based on the seventies northern soul scene although its set in Stoke rather than Wigan.

I was at an a soul night at the corn exchange last year and got an invite to the Hibs All Day Soul Club[or some similar type name].Its supposed to be quite good but couldn't bring myself to go there.

If you want to hear some good stuff on the radio try Solar Radio on Sky channel 0129.

The Golden Torch in Stoke-on-Trent was a famous all-nighter venue even before the Wigan Casino.

Take your red nose off, clown.Sorry I forgot that you know everything about everything and must bow to your superior musical knowledge.

Incidentally ,Gerri Grainger was always the fourth last record played before eight.

I know absolutely nothing about Northern Soul but used to work with a guy in the early 80s who went down to Wigan Casino every second weekend. He was a hobo it has to be said...

Sawdust Caesar

I've bought loads of compilation CDs and to be honest the majority of the stuff on them is gash. For every great tune there are half a dozen poor/mince ones. But they have been worth buying because there is always one or two crackers on them. Most of the songs already mentioned I know and like, my faves are Turning My Heartbeat Up by The MVPs, The Magic Touch by a girl who's name I've forgotten, and Picture Me Gone (forget who as well).

Trevor Nelson did a bit on Northern Soul for a Channel 4 programme, yet again I can't remember it's name, but it had some good footage of the Casino.

That's them, thanks, that would have been bugging me until I got home. I've heard two versions of Picture Me Gone but Maddies is the biz.
