Toxteth O'Grady
http://www.heartsfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/HeartsNewsDetail/0,,10289~1388310,00.html Csaba Laszlo has thrown down the gauntlet to his reserve players, telling them they have a lot of work to do to force their way into the first team. The Hearts manager is hoping to rely on a progression system at Tynecastle, whereby the U19s feed into the reserves with the second string being groomed for the top team. He had another chance to assess his fringe players in yesterday afternoon's closed-door game against St Johnstone but admitted a lot of hard work lies ahead for a number of them "It was a chance for the reserve team to show their talent and show what players we can use in the future," he said. "It was a good exercise. I know the players I have here and sometimes it is interesting to see their attitudes. I was satisfied with some of them but others will have to show a lot more. "These games are not difficult for players. If you can play football, you can play football. If you can't, you can't. In professional football there is only one thing - you can play or you can't. "We must work very hard to change some things. The reserve team must deliver players to the first team and at the moment I'm not so satisfied." Speaking after watching an under-strength Hearts side draw 1-1 with St Johnstone, Csaba also issued a word of warning to players hoping to make their mark in the top team. "We have a lot of work to do. It is the truth," he said. "We are not here to give young people a nice life and nice money. They must do something." "They must know if they want to be a professional football player and show me more. There is not enough at the moment from some of them and they know my opinion. Well said Shabba
Pete Seeger
Sounds like the young guys are going to be getting a good kick in the erse. Hopefully some of the younger guys will turn from being potentially good players to good players. Their attitude has to be right though.
Jammy T
Probably something to do with a multi-batch of 5 year contracts handed out 2 or 3 years ago or so which a number of people on here "assumed" to be a little mental, particular when a few of them thought they were being released... Can someone clear this up for me cos Ive heard a lot about these five year contracts, Im under the impression that they are all 3 years guaranteed with the option of a further 2 if they are deemed worthy enough. Not really an avenue for young players to be sitting on there erse doin nothin or to push them into a so called comfort zone.

I was told that the reason for the 5 year contract was that's what happened in Basketball in Lithuania and at the time VR's sports contract advisors were more used to Basketball than football. He (Vlad) apparently now really regrets handing them out like confetti. I was also told some amazingly positive info last Friday but I think I'll keep quiet on this for the moment. The Merse
Csaba really does talk a good game. Think alot of the malaise last season was also caused by the fact that there was never anybody from the reserves pushing the first team for a place, leading to lazy and poor performances as there was never much fear of being dropped. God - it would need to be amazingly positive to make up for the first paragraph Vlad started his time at Hearts being advised on footballing matters by Basketball gadges?? That is one hell of a mistake. Sheer incompetence which has caused HIM to add directly to the clubs debt. That beggars belief my man. Possibily it has backfired to a certain degree but one player making the grade (e.g Eggert and the future potential in selling) could prove it was a good financial decision after all. Charlie-Brown
As I recall the majority of the 5 year contracts were given out in summer 2006 to first team squad youngsters Berra, Wallace, Elliot as well as Frail's 2005-06 U19 team that got to the Scottish Youth Cup final losing to Celtic in extra-time (Mole, Jonsson, Driver, J.Thomson, M.Park, the Armstrongs, Lithgow, Mackle, Doherty, McLaughlin). The 5 year contracts have definitely protected the club financially regards the best young players and some of these have subsequently won improved deals and other promising kids in the current U19's have been given contacts up to 5 years in length but these latter deals being a mixture of a fixed term + optional extension years.....the downside has been that some of the players haven't progressed and the club has an on-going financial commitment to these guys but the up-side benefits outweigh the negatives in my opinion. As to adding to the debt well it's all U19 players so the salaries concerned won't be huge. How many other decisions were decided on basketball philosophies. That a manager shouldnt be the main man? That a team should be picked by a committee? That the timing of subs isnt hugely crucial and you can decide how many minutes a player should get before the game starts? That you can chose positions by stats being fed into a computer? That you should rotate a squad incessantly? Brilliant, we now have people defending Vlad (not you I guess because you at least accept it was a mistake) running an SPL team based upon advice of basketball specialists You couldnt make it up. Yet not necessarily the best thing for all the failures - although we now all know that Vlad doesnt really care much for throwing people on the scrap heap if it benefits him. And to be honest, nearly every 3 years we have had at least one player developed from a teenager at Hearts into somebody valuable to the team, with a sell-on or potential sell on value. So this revolution hasnt exactly garnered better results than in the past.

The REAL reason Hearts AND Hibs AND Falkirk and etc etc have many young players on 5 year contracts is to prevent them losing their best young talents to other clubs who can then offer them sweeties knowing that at arbritration the panel will (usually) set a very low compensation figure for these young players compared to what the clubs could usually receive for the player selling them on the open market. magicTs
5yr contracts for young players are only sensible if the individual is exceptional and clearly going to have a great sell on value. We have had one exceptional youngster in 25 years (Craig Gordon). As predicted at the time it was stupid scattergun approach by Romanov which was never going to work and would lead to average players swanning about in a comfort zone knowing full well that they would have to be paid up eventually. Let's hope he has learnt his lesson.

Rod Petrie gave out 6 or 7 long term contracts (4-5 years) to Hibs 'next-generation' of young players after John Collins young Hibs got impressive results at Kilmarnock & elsewhere with the likes of Fletcher, McNeill, McCormack, Campbell, Gray, Lynch, McCaffrey etc in the team ...... 3 of those players handed contracts back in 2006-07 left Fester in the recent transfer window for little or no money being victims of the 'Petrie Crunch'.... others like the next 'Jimmy Johnstone' Jamie McCluskey had previously been released. Nope. It's entirely understandable teams like Hibs and Falkirk do that as they pay sweeties in comparison to us. Hearts give 5yr contracts on big salaries therefore guaranteeing huge sums of money to players who have barely kicked a ball in anger. Comfort zone central. If you defend at all costs no matter the rights or wrongs you'll get caught out when Vlad allegedly admits it was a mistake You are currently defending and promoting something that has been apparently accepted as being wrong and is in the process of being reversed. Jammy T
It's called scraping the bottom of the barrel. No its called being genuinely shocked that footballing decisions were being made on the back of advice from basketball people Its called questioning how many other of the pesh decisions made in the last 3 years have been as a result of advice from people with no footballing knowledge or expertise. At any other time in the history of Hearts our fans would have been united in ridiculing decisions being made by some sort of basketball fraternity. Now because it suits peoples agendas they shrug their shoulders...
