Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Free and unforgettable.

The Top of the Rock observation deck at the Rockefeller Center is better than the Empire State Building (mainly because you can see the Empire State Building from it, and that's the most iconic thing in the Manhattan skyline).

I found the Ground Zero Museum Workshop fascinating and moving.

Loads of ideas here: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g60763-Activities-New_York_City_New_York.html

I really enjoyed the cruise right round Manhattan Island. It's 3 hours long and you get great views that you can't get anywhere else; it is also narrated by a tour guide so you have all the landmarks pointed out. If 3 hours sounds a bit long, they have a 2 hour semi-circle cruise too.

The Statin Island ferry is free of charge and it sails past the Statue of Liberty, so you can get a few photos without going onto Ellis Island with hoards of other tourists. You could also try wandering around/going for a meal in Greenwich village. The shops there are boutiques selling all sorts of stuff not huge department stores/malls and its a lot more chilled than downtown Manhattan if thats the sort of thing you're looking for.

Get off Manhattan. Amazing how many people go to New York and never do.

If you like steak you have to go to Peter Lugers steakhouse in Brooklyn. http://www.peterluger.com/ Amazing steaks, but you need to pay cash as tey don't take cards. There is also a great pizza place just under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Brooklyn side.

Go to the Bronz Zoo as well if it's a nice day.

Visit the Yankees Stadium before they knock it down and build the new one.

I love just walking around New York. Start at Central Park and just walk south until you get to the bottom of the island, you see so much more and get a real feel of the city, as opposed to travelling around underground.

This is so true, when i went to new york i wanted to go see Ground Zero, and found out that there was the museum. I went in and was holding back the tears. It is such a moving place. You see all the work pases and all the debrie from some off the planes.

And then when you go to the room with all the pictures and the letters from the children to there dad's etc it then becomes very hard.

Its free to get in but all they require is a donation to get in. Well worth digging deep in your pocket.

Loved New York, we jumped on a coach to a shopping outlet in New Jersey which is about 40 minutes away called Woodbury Common, all designer makes at discounted rated, spent a fortune but well worth making the trip for even half a day!!

Enjoy your trip!

Bronx Zoo is quality.

They have "ghetto Wednesdays" where people from the hood get in for free. :) I told them i lived in Glasgow - no questions asked.

It's donation only one day a week.

The Top of the Rock is excellent, and unlike the Empire State Building, you don't get herded like cattle. You may also end up queuing for a long time to get up the Empire State (even if you have booked tickets in advance).

A trip to the United Nations is also pretty interesting - depending upon what is going on that particular day, you may get to see the Security Council chamber and the General Assembly. Having said that, it's worth checking in advance as I think they are doing some renovations to the building so that may restrict access.

Also, check out 'free days' at the museums (for example, the Museum of Modern Art - MoMa - is free from 4pm to 8pm on Fridays). MoMa has a great cafe - Cafe 2 (way better than your typical Museum food, and a way nicer environment). Worth going for a coffee and a bite to eat.

The American Museum of Natural History and Metropolitan Museum of Art are both amazing, and you could easily spend a day in each.

One gem that too many people miss is the Cloisters. It houses the Metropolitan Museum's (amazing) collection of art and architecture from medieval Europe. The building itself is made up of the reassembled parts of several medieval European cloisters. It's in Manhattan, but near the very northern tip.

Go to P.J. Clarke's (915 3rd Avenue) for an excellent burger - nothing fancy, just great food.

L'il Frankie's - fantastic pizza etc restaurant in the East Villlage ... very reasonable ...

http://www.lilfrankies.com/

And they run an internet radio station from the front window ...

Go see CBGB's (although it's a trendy store now - and they don't let you take photos - but you still get a feel for the place ... 315 Bowery, near L'il Frankie's ...

Use http://www.pollstar.com/ to find out what gigs are on - I got 2 $40 tix last-minute for Robert Plant and ALison Krauss in June, from a ticket site called mycityrocks.com - for a total of $50 delivered to the hotel !

Museum of Modern Art (http://www.moma.org) is fantastic and the attached restaurant (The Modern - http://www.themodernnyc.com/modern/modern.html) is excellent if you fancy splashing out. Guggenheim and PS1 (PS1 free with MoMA ticket) are also good.

Greenwich village and SoHo are great for walking around (as is most of Manhattan to be honest) and The Mercer Kitchen in SoHo is pretty good (http://www.mercerhotel.com).

Bear in mind that Rab's a tightwad and gets a free meal should any hapless tourists come in and mention it was "recommended by Rab".
