A Boy Named Crow

Didn't want to crash the thread about wars between democracies with this...

Why do people get so hung up on democracy? It is often spouted as accepted fact that it is the best way to run a country. This is rubbish. Most people don't know the first thing about running a country. Turnout for "democratic" elections is often shamefully low. Even if they could be bothered to tear themselves away from Big Brother long enough to vote, many people wouldn't know how to vote in their own interest, or the country's interest anyway.

John Stuart Mill had it dead right when he proposed plural voting. This system would essentially give clever and better qualified people more of a say than those less capable of rational thought. This would bring about a situation whereby the right decisions were made and eveybody would benefit.

Basically democracy is flawed because it fails to save people from themselves!

We could all vote for who should get a vote.

I think democracy is over rated too and am very glad of the unelected second house.

Suffrage is indiscriminate.

A lot of truths but democracy seems to be the best of a bad lot. I reckon you should be disenfranchised if you get caught out by phishing email about barclays bank or if you respond to people who send you letters from nigeria saying give us ?1000 and we will send you ?1 million. Too many thickos with a vote. (same goes for X-Factor and Big Brother fans:sterb003:.)

IMO, democracy is very important, as governments need to be scared of their people...however, i think we have elections far too often - governments don't have long enough to put into practice long term policies and as a result go for daft short term fixes that don't actually work (just look at the penal system)

i think there should be a general election every 10 years, with an approval poll every 5. if a governemt fails this (like if 3/4 of votes want them out or something) then a general election is called early.

also, there's no ****g WAY MPs should be allowed to have shares in companies (which i think they are...?)
