Skype - what are the pros and cons?

I swear by it mate......we have all our conference calls on it for work......saves trying to get everyone together in one room......

 

Also allows me to speak to (and see) my brother and his kids in Canada.....for free..!!

 

Pros..??.........it's free.......

 

Cons..??.........Can't think of any........

Pros - dead easy to use.

 

Con (tho' I haven't used it for ages) - it seemed a bit "resource-hungry" ...

I take it your machine does not have speakers and a Mic built in..??

 

Luckily enough my laptop has them and a webcam built in so I can use it wherever I go without lifting any extra kit......

 

Great piece of software, couldn't do without it now.........company phone bills have went right down since we discovered it..!!

No, Moz, my pc does not have a mic, but has speakers - I now realize I'll need to get a webcam thingy as well!:)

It means it takes up a lot of your PC's processing power.

Agreed on both points. It's got to the point where, although I use it a lot, I load it for a scheduled call, then kill it when I'm finished.

VoIP is an interesting technology and great for small businesses in particular to save some money, particularly multi-site organisations. However, I find the voice quality still needs improved before it can seriously challenge traditional telephony.
