Obua - the opinions of someone on the WP committee

Say What Again

Apologies if this has been posted on one of the Obua threads already. I haven't read every post and thought maybe this snippet of info deserved a(nother) separate thread.

I've been speaking to someone who was on the committee deciding Obua's permit yesterday.

Apparently Hearts present their case etc, part of which includes of video/DVD of the player in action.

His opinion was that the WP was granted purely because of the guys ability and that he would bring something to the Scottish game.

All he would say is 'the boy looks a player, a very good player'.

He said they weren't allowed to discuss anything outside the panel and he really couldn't say any more.

Hopefully his first impressions are right, though I realise any video would have been a 'best bits'. :)

Can anyone corroborate that Hearts had to release Cormack as he was signed on full forms when he was underage?

The evening news said a huge factor was that Csaba gave a 60 minute talk trying to persuade the panel to give him the WP. As Uganda werent in the top 70 they werent too keen. Cant find the article now but it said somthing along those lines.

If Obua really was wanted by West Ham and Chievo then we can assume has has quality. In that case i would just say.... It's a shame he can't play right back!!!

I wasn't around at the time so can only confirm his version of events.

He was on the groundstaff at Hearts but reckons he was a wee bit wild and a 'dispute' with a groundsman and a piece of machinery, led to a departure of his choosing.

What format was it on?

Is it in blockbusters?

Was it not on one of those old Soviet Video players that Del Boy got his hands on a shipment of?

I am always sceptical of people saying they turned down much bigger clubs in much bigger leagues than Hearts - however I must admit he looks like he could be a player.

However, the season starts on Saturday and where is he? Back in Uganda, possibly still injured. Should I start to get worried? It seems every player we sign that is highly thought of, good track record, looks a player etc, comes and either gets injured or can't be ar**d.

Hope it is not going to be a month before he plays because quite frankly, I just can't see us winning games with the line-up we put out on Saturday.

Also if you are showing DVDs of him in action etc then again it sounds like they are showing him geting forward, creating, scoring and therefore I still don't think Csaba will be playing him at LB. Which is good because another creative driving force in midfield or just off the front man is what we need but is bad because we desperately desperately need a LB and a RB.

Do the members of these panel HAVE to be ex-Hibbies? Or is it just a job for the boys scenario?

No they can be ex Celtic or Rangers;)

I hope he turns out to be a good player for us, I am certainly optimistic. However, I have seen videos that made rubbish players look really good, Beslija for one.

He was interviewed in the Scotsman a couple of years ago and said that when it came to signing pro papers, Hibs stole in and promised to buy his folks a new house.

He said that swung it for him.

Although the website (IIRC) says he turned them down, the payer himself just said he knew they were interested.

Can't wait to see him in action though.

So ?100.00 for a house in Leith swung it?

I played against Cormack in a juvenile representative match on the day he signed for Hibs and the word then was that he signed for Hibs because they offered him ?13 pw as against the ?6 10/- (?6. 50) he was receiving form HMFC. Apparently the then Hearts manager, Tommy Walker, was a deeply religious man who believed that youths with a lot of money in their pockets were more likely to go off the rails. Don't know how true that is.

I was best pals with his son at school. Shan player, but better than me. Peter Cormack Senior was the first man to have an Escort Harrier round our way, and he let his son drive it, much to everyone else's dismay at our school.

Peter (Senior) is a really nice man.

Very true. I still have a Eurogoals video that has half a dozen crackers from your namesake.

It seems videos make players look slimmer as well, or it did in Musemic's case.

Encouraging to hear, but not at all surprising. The job of such appeal panels is to judge whether or not they have enough ability. Or if not, whether they might boost Celtic's popularity in the Far East.
