loveofthegame
How many people is it for?! That is expensive if its for 2, but not bad if its for 4. For direct flights from Edin check out: http://www.continental.com I'm flying from Edin direct to Newark in December. for hotels your best bet is http://www.hotels.com - allows you to choose location, star rating and price range. And there's always http://www.travelsupermarket.com
Beverley
kinda depends on how many people are going if thats a good or a bad price. most i've spent is about ?850 for the week, flight & hotel included. last time we went (in april) we called the RBS travel advisor and they knocked it down by about ?100. you get that on the royalties scheme. expedia i think were one of the best when we were looking originally. if you're going for more than just a few days, maybe a week or so, its maybe worth flying to canada with someone like http://www.canadianaffair.com as they have really cheap flight to canadian cities, although they are all from london. also, rather than a hotel, it might be worth looking for an apartment for the time you are there, as they can sometimes work out much cheaper
Princess
I went for my 30th a couple of years ago in April and found looking online (Expedia) was working out dearer so went to Thomas Cook and they booked flights and hotel separate for me, flight was with KLM (Edin-Schipol-Newark) worked out about ?285 and Holiday Inn worked out about ?50 night for the room. Paws (FTH)
Booking your flights and hotels seperately is the best option if you want to reduce the cost. I flew direct from Edinburgh to Newark (about 30 min train ride to NYC) with Continental airlines. If you book in advance you can get some pretty good fares. You could also try http://www.opodo.co.uk for flights. With the exchange rate on the dollar still being pretty good by booking the hotel yourself online (and by paying in $s) you should be able to get a decent hotel in a central location for around ?50/night

In Absentia
Try STA travel on Forrest Road or online. They managed to get flights for me and my mates for ?220 return flying from Glasgow via Iceland to JFK with Iceland air in April a couple of years ago. keith
One piece of advice I was given is don't get a cheap hotel as it'l probably be in an area you don't want to be anyway near.

heartgarfunkel
Was there for the first time a few weeks ago, what a city. Would recommend the Milford Plaza hotel, bang in the middle of midtown. Safe, cheap and cheerful, the location is outstanding. $12 in a joe to Nevada Smith's if there's a Hearts game on!

Andy.C
Would also reccommend Hotel Thirty 30...(funnily enough number 30 on E30th street). Relatively small rooms, but well decorated, good value, and a cracking location.
Koolkeith
Keep an eye on continenatal flights. I went edi to newark at beginning of june for 270 quid. Bargain. I found accomodation a bit expensive though.

HMFC 1874
just been to thomas cook, and theyve got me a package now for 1600 for 2 people, with direct flights from edinburgh, not too bad, thats for 6 days. expedia isnt looking too great, getting around the same price, thought it would be cheaper looking into booking seperate flights and accomadation now, thats seems to be the best option although I wasnt keen in the first place
Diane
That price seems OK but not outstanding. Accommodation in New York is stonkingly expensive. Check the same dates directly on http://www.continental.com to see what the flight prices are. Then you can figure out how much Thomas Cook are stinging you for accommodation and see if you can do better. Always, always check the hotels on http://www.tripadvisor.com - whether booked independently or not. Also, the New York forum on the same site will give you loads and loads of advice on accommodation and what to do when you're there. I love New York - been twice this year. Flew with Continental direct from Edinburgh and arranged my own accommodation both times. If you do nothing else - walk the Brooklyn Bridge for the most quintessential New York experience and the best views. Free, and unforgettable. bertracoon
If you're flying into Newark then look into staying in Hoboken, NJ rather than NY itself. You can get a train into the World trade Center or Penn Station (33rd street) for $1.75, it takes about 30 minutes. Worth looking into if the hotels in NYC are getting silly, Hoboken's a nice wee place as well and means you get some great views of the city from the other side of the river. Also, you can do Liberty State Park and the ferry form Staten island much easier. I agree with Buffalo Bill about Top of the Rock, much better than Empire State as you get to see that in the photos and there's waaaaay less people. Nevada Smith's if there's a game on as well.....
