CF11JamTart
I am showing my ignorace (and probably laziness in terms of not looking it up myself) - but where is the nearest town/ city to it. Am swithering about a trip to North France and Belgium - it would be good to incorporate Contalmaison into the trip. Is it near Lille at all? Greedy_Jambo
I'm showing my ignorance even more by not knowing what the memorial cairn is.

I'll dig out the map, and try to persuade Mrs CF11JamTart, that she REALLY wants to visit northern France for her summer hols.

captain
I'm not much older Stef! If its something you are interested in then I'd recommend having a read of that website and Jack Alexander's book Macrae's Battalion. And there was a brilliant documentary last year called Supreme Sacrifice on BBC. Before you know it you'll be well clued up mate.
almair
My wife and I went to Contalmaison in May (stayed in arrass) It was quite a moving experience and mrs almair had a tear in her eye and I a lump in my throat, we bought a small bunch of flowers to lay at the cairn. The cairn is easily accessible for disabled people as my wife is confined to her electric scooter.I agree that Albert is the nearest biggish town nearby. Cant remember junction number but its signposted albert/perone. Have visited a few times. Stayed in Arras which is wonderful, Ibis hotel at Grand Place area is fine and fair price. About 20 mins from Albert which is really central to all you want to see. To me it's a privilage to visit these places and I honestly would ask anybody, particularly a fellow Jambo to go, it is truly humbling.

Fenerjambo
If in Albert then a visit to the underground museum is a must. Very interesting and loads of scenes behind windows showing soldiers camped in the trenches making it life like.
