Behind closed door competitive match

Apart from during Covid, when did we last play a competitive match behind closed doors? If ever.

I believe we got an allocation of zero at Pittodrie once in the 80s due to works at the ground, but there was a home support.

Why is this D Minsk match behind closed doors?

Minsk is in Belarus, a close ally of Russia. Belarusian teams can still play European football but must play their ‘home’ ties in a neutral country and behind closed doors

If it's not safe for the fans to travel, is it safe for the team?

UEFA have obviously approved of the venue but what is the point of playing in Europe without the supporters cheering on their team's

I doubt it's got anything to do with it being 'unsafe' for the supporters to travel rather that it would be unfair on Dinamo Minsk to have no supporters there of their own.

We didn't all get rounded up and stuck in a corner.

Aberdeen v Hearts League Cup and League matches in 85/86. Got beat 1-0 & 3-0.

I know a few older fans that traveled up courtesy of an Edinburgh Red.

Belarus are being punished for being close allies with Russia.

Aye, I was there with my brother and mates and were sussed out by the home support pretty much right away. If my memory serves me well we got gubbed 4-0 or 4-1 or something.

It's not about safety. It's perfectly safe to go to Belarus. It's about punishing Belarus.

There was more than a few few of us. We played them in the LC on the Wednesday and then the league on the Saturday, both of which was supposed to be home fans only.

Didn't stop a good few hundred Hearts fans getting tickets and, as you rightly say, we were rounded up and put into one area

To be honest, it’s utterly ridiculous that they’re even in the competition, if they cannot play games at home and let fans enjoy following their team, then ban them until things return to normal, it’s utterly absurd that we’re being dragged to Azerbaijan for a game behind closed doors ffs

We weren’t rounded up. We did have to sit and listen to their fans ripping the pish out of us though. We left to their great amusement when the third or fourth hit the net.

It’s not safe according to FCDO who have advised against travel. Doesn’t mean you can’t go but you’ll get no consulate support and you won’t be insured and you very probably won’t get a visa. Best give it a swerve I’d say

Not exactly safe being made to go to a country with Russia on one side and Iran on the other either, ridiculous decision really.

My memory of those games is a bit different to others. You’re obviously correct with the scorelines but there were signs in both performances, before the team noticeably tired at the end of the league match, that we were onto something with that team.
We were arguably the better side for one and a half matches. The LC tie was decided by a Roddy McDonald clearance smacking Eric Black in the dish and flying into the top corner iirc. We also gave a decent account of ourselves on the Saturday. Unfortunately Robbo was injured for the LC tie and was a sub in the league game and Sandy Clark was still suspended from battering Ally McCoist in the battle of Ibronx the previous month.

All due respect to Paul Cherry and Brian McNaughton, they were not Clark and Robertson!
On topic, I’m totally against punishing sports people but if UEFA deem they have to play BCD in another country, why even let them enter? Why not Hungary where they played their qualifiers (I know it’s because the stadium doesn’t have enough luxurious free stuff for their rep)? Why punish Hearts also? All they care about is their rep has an expensive jolly in a cat 4 stadium and he/she will definitely get that in Baku.

I went up for the LC game on an aberdeen mini bus. Probably 8 Jambos on it. Stayed over for the weekend game. Was also put in the corner.
