What a player.

Outstanding today. Always looking for the ball and tracking back.

Lucky to have him.

So weird that some Hearts fans don't rate him. He's inconsistent but we couldn't afford him if he was at peak form most weeks.

Great little player and one of the most naturally talented in our squad.

Dhanda and Vargas took the heat off him a bit I felt. This let him play instead of being doubled up on/targeted.

He plays his best football when we're the better/dominant team. Today suited him

Looks to me like he’s been told he has to work harder off the ball. I’m a fan.

Definite difference in that part of his game. Kept Tavernier very quiet in an attacking sense.

I thought he worked a lot harder out of possession than he usually does yesterday. His quality on the ball is never in doubt. I would have subbed him for Oda around 60 minutes as we were troubling them with balls in behind for Vargas pace.

same .  I thought he burst a gut yesterday.  I think naisy has made it clear he has to do more than just be good on the ball against these teams.  And he knows he has a fight on for his place.

It seems the increased competition has spurred him on. His corners were superb and I also seen him track back and even go in for challenges with Rangers players.

I think we are going to see a big season from him.

He played better than he normally does against the old firm but I wouldn’t say he was superb.

He needs to keep up yesterdays level of effort and work rate to be in with a chance of a new deal.

He is talented player and a joy to watch when he’s in full flow.

Last year of his contract so will have to work hard to be kept on. Has the ability but is very inconsistent

I thought he contributed pretty well when we didn’t have the ball. In particular he stopped Tavernier hurting us like he usually does. Didn’t do a lot of key stuff in an attacking sense but his work rate was noticeably higher.

We set a standard in work rate, tempo and general teamwork yesterday which will make us a very difficult team to handle if we keep it up.

Looks fit, worked hard and the needs tae tackle mare crew even got a 50/50 out of him too.

Looks like he wants to make up for lost time!

I'm not sure thats the case - there has been a lot of frustration at him for his going missing in big games. But, the recruitment of Dhanda and hopefully Spittal should take away the ease in which shutting him down (and therefore our entire creative outlet).

The frustration has only been there because its known how good he can be. I wouldn't say it comes from fans not rating him, just annoyance because he's supposed to be a key player, and key players shouldn't go missing in big moments.

Anyway, I think we'll see a repeat of his first season with us where he was notching assists every other game.

Personally, I'd like to see him put his laces through a few shots. He tries to place everything and sometimes a bit of force is required.

The flip side of competition is that perhaps players have been told they can go out and run themselves into the ground rather than needing to pace themselves so much.

Yes, during the week you are competing in training for your spot, but it is probably reassuring that you can give 100% without fear of needing to keep up your reserves when the bench is as strong as yesterday.

Same old Barrie imo . Tracks back and pressures opponents and tries to put the his skills to good use when in attack . Major difference yesterday was he was not our only creative attacking player so he was harder to snuff out and the fact he is fully recovered from long term injury with a pre season behind him imo

Amazing the impact this can have on players, Grant being another one yesterday.

As has been said before there aren’t many (if any) more naturally talented footballers in Scotland than Barrie he just needs that intensity and more killer instinct in his game.

I love to watch Barrie McKay play football.

Silky as ****.

I would like him to get on the score sheet a bit more this season, though.

I think this could be the best season we have seen of Barrie as we now have more creative players than we have ever had in his time at the club. He needs other players who see and play the passes he see’s, we have lacked that for years but now have.

Agree with your post, I just wish he would have a pop now and then. I thought he had an excellent game yesterday.

The Treasurer

He's always been able to spot a pass and more importantly, play that pass, but as others have said, looks like he is working harder.

Thought he faded in the second half, but that was down to the shift he had put in.

Oda be a JT

Has taken a a lot of stick on here, sometimes rightly so, but a cracking player - I think other players/roles really helped him and if we can get that every week from him he will be a huge player this season.

I'm pretty vocal about McKay, never been his biggest fan but he was decent yesterday. Don't think he was brilliant as such, but certainly one of his better performances in a big game.

I'm never surprised when he doesn't start, which kind of telling. Great player, just always leaves you a little disappointed that he didn't do more.

Was good yesterday but that left wing spot is still wide open and up for grabs.

lost in space

Hi did "OK" - which is better than usual. Had a decent chance in first half but put it over the bar.  He did track back more than usual but I dont remember him putting in a tackle (.....ever!). Surprised he started - is better to come off the bench when the opposing defence is knackered.

He can make things happen and when in full flight he is exciting to watch.  Doesnt do enough of that though - and often hides.

I hope he ups his game and has a good season for us.

Saw him put in 3 tackles first half. Something i have never seen him do. Good first half but faded second but i thought he played well. Look he is frustrating at times but has it in his locker to be brilliant problem is we dont see it enough. I liked what we got from him first half yesterday lets hope he keeps it going.

Because of his history of “not turning up” against the currants I was disappointed to see him in the starting 11 but, hats off to him yesterday,  played well and worked hard.

Some memory issues for folk on here! Been mediocre/wasteful majority of last season and traditionally doesn't turn up against the rangers in particular...

Glad to hear he had a good game but he needs to do it consistently.

I have to agree with you although he does have that little bit of magic at times that can open up defences. He sees passes that others don't.

He had a great chance yesterday from a good pass from Dhanda and should have at least made their goalie make a save but he hit it over the bar.

Absolutely agree. The fact we know what he's capable of makes it more frustrating when he doesn't perform.

" great chance"

Bit harsh, it was a first time shot from outside the box.

It was just on the edge of the box so he should have been working their goalie from there.

He doesnt constantly tackle. Yesterday he got stuck in which was great to see something we dont see enough of. The guys round about me yesterday at the game even commented on his tackling. As i said anyway he had a good first half but did fade as he run his heart oit first half.

Yesterday I think we saw a hungry McKay. He was harassing, chasing, tackling. I think he realises this is a big season so I’m hoping that he continues to kick on. Was brilliant yesterday

Aye, but it's not a "great chance".

Any goal from a first time shot from that position is a belting goal, goal of the season contender.

Great chance is pushing it.

Wheres the lazy part coming from. He ran his heart out yesterday. You must be the only person that thinks he constantly tackles. He doesnt and never has.

I find the criticism bizarre at times. He didn’t have a great season last year and was clearly carrying a knock. But he’s our most technically gifted player by quite some distance. Type of player that makes football enjoyable to watch.

He has always tracked back and tackled as much as any other winger.

All roads lead to Gorgie

He is a very good player especially when given the freedom to drift in off the wing and play a one two or try to slide in a pass to someone running ahead of him in the box. He had a spell a couple of seasons ago where he was hitting more shots on target by first drifting across the face of the box and then hitting them with his right foot. Since Shanks arrived he maybe looks to pick him out first, understandable but I would like to see Barrie be more selfish again and have more strikes on goal himself. No way would I be letting him go as he has lots of plus points to his game.

Contract year Baz is a totally different player. If he only had 1 year deals his whole career he would have played in the Prem.
