Sandy Jardine

Nice from the club to officially remember the man.

For context he and Macdinald were as responsible for turning this club around as much as the FOH and Ann Budge.

Absolutely loved following Hearts during those years.

Sandy Jardine rolled along the pitch.

What a signing he was class on and off the pitch, totally committed and mentored Craig Levein. Plus I drew him in a draw a player competition in the match day programme and won a Marshalls chunky chicken champion t shirt two sizes to small for me.

I'm sure he won Scottish Player of the Year with us when he was in his mid 30s.

Class both on and off the pitch.

I remember being at his 1000th career match at Tynecastle.

I've not looked this up but have a vague recollection it was against Rangers.

One of the classiest players I’ve seen in a maroon jersey.

Probably the biggest influence on the pitch for the development of Craig Levein.

I think he might have been 40 when he won player of the year.

Most players are either disregarded or disliked by opposition fans but I always thought Sandy Jardine was neither and was respected by many non-Hearts and Rangers fans. A real class act.

I remember being at a speakers night and John Grieg told a story of how Jardine said we were interested in him and he wanted to come.

Greig said something along the lines of I knew how much Hearts meant to him, as they did to me (Greig) so I couldn’t say no but it was a huge mistake letting him go.

You're not far wrong, just checked and he was 38.  Incredible.

Mate I worked there for two weeks broke my leg playing football thank goodness.

Better to be lucky than good.

And as a club we got lucky.

We were toiling till he and Macdonald showed up.

Jardine was a Hearts man I'm sure.

Doddy is a bluenose wee git.

Both I hold in high regards.

No that means fek aw 😄

Sandy and Doddie were class acts and completely transformed the club from a genuine laughing stock to near league winners.

Great times being a Hearts supporter when those two and the great Waldo were in charge.

Class defender who's signing in 1982 was a huge part of the rehabilitation of Heart of Midlothian.

Younger, and future, generations of Hearts supporters will, hopefully, never experience those pre-1982/83 days.

The trio of Wallace, Doddie and Sandy were the catalyst for the Hearts we have now and, possibly, probably, almost certainly are the reason our club didn't disappear back then.

The apathy and hopelessness seemed irreversible around 1980-82.

Sandy was a class act and one of our own.  Grew up overlooking Tynie when he went to Tynecastle High, dreaming of playing there.  Pity he never played for us when he was in his prime.  Greig also grew up a Jambo.

Never hid his affection for Rangers. But never for a minute let it affect his professionalism. Just quality.  If it hadn't been for his versatility he'd have had a lot more caps. McGrain was decent but couldn't lace his boots.

Sandy would go on to send his kids to Prestonfield Primary, even when he was at Rangers, the same school Greig had gone to.

Sandy was poetry in motion on the football field. It was him Mercer and Mcdonald who put us back on the map. I will forever be grateful to these there legends.

Jardine was an absolute legend. I had speech therapy from his wife back when I was at school too.

Aye Doddy is/was ....but he was in an interview quite a few years after 86, and said that even though he was always a exRangers man and never thought he could love any other club, but did with Hearts and that they were joint equal in his heart. Also that 86 impacted him so deeply that he will never get over it.

Nobody who remembers it will get over it. Not until we beat Celtic in a final, or something similar (can't think what, realistically)
