Who was our best deadline day signing?

Stolen from a tweet by football scotland - for me the standouts are either Aguiar or Stevenson (twice iirc?). Anyone got any others?

All roads lead to Gorgie

I can't remember if it was on deadline day or not but Bruno Aguiar arrived on loan via Kaunas in January 2006. Great player for us.

Beattie.

Some massive moments in a Hearts shirt (or without) considering how little time he was here. Never in a million years expected what was about to follow when we signed him. Shame about his injuries but never affected the outcome at the end of the season!

Chris Hackett. Not for any on-field contribution - just the trolling and seethe that came with it.

I don't think anyone really thought that season would end up being so magnificent, tbf. We had been on all the front pages for the first half of the season.

Not sure if it was deadline day but Neil McCann signing in 1996 was exciting.

He apparently had a foot on the plane to France to sign for a club and, like us with Alan Johnston, Dundee would get no fee.

We swooped last minute with a £200k offer and Dundee accepted happily.

I think we announced Davy Weir and Neil on the same day.

Great day. Second only to Robbo's return in December 1988, perhaps.

Didn't we sign Jim Hamilton and mccann from Dundee in a swoop?

McCann was July 96 and Hamilton was December 96.

Stevie Frail from Dundee. Kept us up that season and a late equaliser at Parkhead was one main reason. Good enough to play for Scotland till his bad injury.

At the deadline there was no mention on the late Scottish (midnight) news on the BBC, morning news or newspapers. Nothing till the stop press of the afternoon (next day) Evening News "Hearts sign Stephen Frail".

A plane to Austria, Sturm Graz, I recall if I’m not mistaken.

McCann, Davie Weir, Jeremy Goss. Same day. Ceefax joy explosion.

Iirc, Jim came a wee bit after. Pretty sure he was still with Dundee when we beat them in the LC semi around October 96.

We had certainly signed him by the end of the year though as he scored twice in the New Year win.

Mind you, all of the above is up for debate, jack. Just my memory of it so might not be factual. 😁

Ah!

You're right, bud.

Neil might have ended up pals with Arnie Schwarzenegger (sp). Big fan of Sturm, I believe.

I checked London Hearts.

Jim Hamilton did play for Dundee in our 3-1 LC semi final win in October '96.

He scored their goal.

It's funny how I remember transfers, I remembered both were from Dundee in the same season, but insomehow had it in my head they were signed together?

When we signed Hamilton, was it just him or was there 2 players?

I recall one of McCann's first games - if not his debut. A slog in the League Cup v Stenhousemuir where we scraped through. Darren Beckford (remember him?)also made his debut and clinched it for us.

I think Terry got our goal in regulation time...

Pretty sure Andy Webster signed on deadline day at the last minute second time round. Quality defender.

He did indeed.

Was the coca cola cup

Played at Easter Road.

Beckford scored in the first half after a a stramash in box infront of what was going to be the famous 5 stand as it is now.

We filled the entire home.

Hearts were brilliant that season

Fond memories queuing up to get tickets to the final right along mcleod street

I was thinking the same. I still remember looking at a newspaper and seeing a photo of JJ with McCann, Weir, and Jeremy Goss(?).

I thought at the time that in JJ we had a decisive manager with an eye for a good player. I dared to hope there might be good times ahead…

While we have signed some great players I think keeping a hold of Shankland this winter could end up being one of the most important bits of business in many years

I think Stephane Paille scored, too.

JJ made some terrific signings in those days. Stevie Fulton in 95, Cameron, Weir and McCann in 96 then Adam and Flogel.

Little wonder we were only 7 points away from the title and won the Cup in 1998.

Two out of three isn't bad, I guess.

Though Jeremy Goss was great in FIFA 98!

Imagine the seethe on here if folk had to regularly queue up again in actual queues. Used to be an event, getting tickets for things like concerts and matches. 😆

Yes, when you think back to the quality of that squad!
And only the brilliance of Gazza prevented us lifting the League Cup…

I sat next to Barasa at an Easter Road derby.  I will tell you what you would not have stolen his crisps.  He was an absolute bear of a boy.

Queued up for the 96 cup final.

Queued up for the 98 cup semi vs Falkirk at Ibrox

Queued up overnight got the 98 cup final. Also.

Back before loyalty points killed it for everyone else

I recall buying tickets in one of the turnstiles at Tynecastle for that game in the week or so before the game. They must have used the turnstiles rather than the ticket office to handle the numbers.

The ticket office being the old offices at the side of the old stand.

Was a nightmare one in and one out big John Paul doing security

I think Bruno Aguiar is a good shout, he was one of the shed load of signings we made on deadline day In JAN 06. Very good player and pretty much was our only real creative spark or threat at the top end of the pitch when we finished 3rd under Csaba Lazlo a couple of seasons later.
