I love them.  But they are hard to find nowadays . I assume due to their unhealthy content. I bought 4 last night at Asda but they werent the best quality. Anyone know a place which sells quality ones ?

Loved cream cookies when I was young. Can't get one anymore.

Remember Crawfords? Their humongous cream finger thingies. Probably cost about 20 quid, now.

Anywhere around Aberdeen.

Used ro go and stay with family friends in Portlethen for our summer holidays as kids, and the butteries were a highlight.

The Turriff Highland Show gets an honourable mention too.

Stephen's make them and supply them to some stores too (Spar and Co-op).

Aldi also stock their own ones which are OK for supermarket versions.

Love them.

Watched the hairy bikers making them one programme and they kept adding butter to the pastry folding it, rolling it and adding more butter, folding it rolling it time after time.

No wonder they taste so good, but they are like a heart attack on a plate. And I add extra salt on mine too.

Eat them sparingly.

Decadent filth. Little wonder this country is in the state it's in.

Love a buttery. My grandparents lived in Stonehaven and always used to have them for breakfast when I was there.

Bought from a bakery are always best. Never been able to get them quite the same down here. The ones in Asda are the closest I've found.

The bakery at parkhead does them. I think maybe the one at sighthill does too. Both great wee bakeries! Randomly found them in the self serve bakery bit at Tesco at Stenhouse too. But of course the best ones are up in Aberdeen. Jj ross' or the bread guy both excellent.

I thought Aberdonians called them ‘rolls’ and what we’d call a roll they called a ‘softie’.

Yip. Every time I'm up at the in laws and they're asking what we all want for breakfast I get confused.

It's confusing what rolls can get called in different parts of our country. We were on a trip down to Argyll and Bute a few years back, and were in Campbelltown when we wanted something sweet from a bakery for a quick snack. I saw a "biscuits" sign, so thought that'll do...not realising that's what they call small rolls in that area. Not what we were wanting!

Always called them butteries rather than rowies, absolutely superb heated up with a bit of melted butter on top. Like to think of them as a dense Scottish croissant!

Is it not lard they're layered with, rather than butter? Which makes them even worse for you! They are tasty though.

Tasty scotch pies too.

I think they add a little more pepper which really brings out the taste.

lost in space

Tesco sell a pack of 6, which are very good. They are not soft - and I prefer them when not soft.

According to my family (fisher folk), they were originally taken on board fishing boats that were going to be away for a few days. They do go harder - but because of the fat content, they don't go off as quickly as morning rolls.

Yes that’s why Fishermen liked them ss they didn’t go off like normal rolls

Tesco sell them. Ask the bakery staff for them already frozen and you can take them home and defrost them to as hard or soft as you like them

I’m a big fan of rowies.

Useful population control measure in the north-east too. One of these little beauties for breakfast every morning and you’re checking out at sixty.

Surely the bacon goes on the roll, no?
