Hungry hippo
Has anyone got any tips or recommendations for which company to look at for buying new windows in Edinburgh? I've never lived in a house that needed new ones before and looking at reviews online hasn't been a great help so far. Thanks
Cruyff
I just got three new windows and a backdoor from the Advanced Group a few months ago. The lads ripped out the old ones and replaced them in like 4 hours and did an amazing job. https://www.theadvancedgroup.co.uk/
vegas-voss
Srj are seeminly quite good.Based in Dunfermline but do loads of work in Edinburgh and Lothians. Going to be using them myself later in the year unless I hear better reports on here now

Thanks Be interesting to see the responses as I really should get new ones myself but keep putting it off as I know it’s not going to come cheap plus like yourself wouldn’t know who to get Think Bryant and cairns are good but probably one of the dearest

PaddysBar
How much are windows these days? I remember a mate who’s a builder telling me to budget for £500 a window but that was maybe 7 or 8 years ago, before the price of everything rocketed.
PaddysBar
Edit. It would have cost me £6/7k back then including a double patio door so I got all the double-glazing replaced for less than a grand as the window frames were still fine.

Fairly certain that for a bog standard 3 bed semi-detached you’d be close to £15k.
Psychedelicropcircle
X7 windows £5600. Needed a front door year previous to this, cropcirclette had been going on about a door called a rock door, apparently it the door of choice for the pharmacist minus the shop😉

heartsfc_fan
Don't use Bryant and Cairns unless money is no object. Very very expensive. Got a quote for a new front door. Just a bog standard UPVC one that was re-enforced with anti snap locks and they wanted just over £2,000 Found a local guy and got the same thing for under £1,000. Craig_
Only advice I would have is to avoid the big companies (CR Smith et al.) like the plague. Plenty of smaller companies out there that will make quality windows at a fraction of the price, you just need a competent joiner to fit them. We got ours from this lot in Livi, then just got a local joiner to fit them - https://www.windowanddoorcompany.com/#. Worked out about half the price the larger outfits were looking for. One thing I did notice with SRJ when they were doing work right across the street from me was how careful they were not to leave mess, they were doing plenty sawing outside in the drive but were always quick to sweep up/hoover the sawdust before it blew across the street. Always find that tradies who are careful to clean up after themselves are more careful and meticulous with the rest of their work.

There are different types and styles of windows in every room of the house weirdly. I think someone had an effort at upgrading some one at a time ages ago. I'm guessing they are mostly well over 30 years old but no idea really.

Cairneyhill Jambo
If you know a good local joiner, might be worthwhile asking them for a quote. They can normally get windows doors etc that are better quality than specialist companies, at a lot cheaper price.
Hungry hippo
I've gone with SRJ. Just under £5k for 4 windows including a massive one which needs divided into 5. I'm comfortable with the price and thanks for the recommendations that SRJ are good. I'm also looking for an electrician now if anyone has any tips! I'd say thats probably reasonable mate in the current climate. I'm in the borders and used gala glazing for 4 new windows in December. 2 large ones (173cm wide 131cm height) a large ensuite (137cm x 131cm) and a square bathroom window 100x90. 6mm outer glass, 4mm inner to help combat noise reduction and frames anthracite pvc outside, white inside. I paid £3200. Think they cover midlothian too. Wouldnt hesitate to recommend them tbh. Fitter was a good bloke. Neat and tidy workmanship with all mess cleared up outside
fbjambo
Got 8 windows and new front door, just over a year ago for just under £9K (extra cost for colour). Used local joinery firm, Home Smart Windows. Very pleased with them. Costs can also depend on trims etc. Parents got SRJ windows few years ago and they are great but their quote was a couple of £K more for us.
