What are you on about, Hearts play in around three hours, great day ahead, football then home to eat the NY leftovers along with a few beers, life is good.

Fair question. Certainly it would be better to have a day of when there is a chance of nice weather. Most businesses don't really treat 2nd as a PH though and it it is just one of your allowance. Got sympathy for those forced to take the 2nd though...

Although I'm permanently on holiday you're probably just as well working and have time of when the weather is better.

Understandable.

My Dad was in the building trade and he always had the first 3 working days of the New Year.

He worked on Xmas day.

Wasted holiday that could be given in the summer months instead.

English late August bank holiday would be a better shout.

Times change.

It was an extra holiday to give you more time to sober up.

They are trying to change the drinking culture in Scotland

Hmm no it doesn't.

It's a public holiday in Scotland and there's not really much debating it.

Actually it does.  Its a historic public holiday only offered to limited employment, mostly public sector.

It's a public holiday FFS. You're debating against an actual fact.

I like the winter bank holidays. Can hibernate, eat left overs and binge watch shit. No pressure to go and do something because the weather is nice.

People in my company who had the 2nd written into their contract 20+ years ago get it.  No new employees are entitled.

If you work for a private sector company that has customers across the UK you will not get regional holidays.

The 2nd is historically a recovery day in Scotland for pissheads to sober up after 2 days hard drinking.  If you don't fall into that category its a miserable day with shite weather that drags before going back to work.

I've not worked for anyone since the 90s that gave the 2nd as a holiday or day in lieu.

It actually is. Whether folk let their company treat them like shot, or they get the holiday on another day of the year is up to them.

Again, peddling the English myth of sobering up. Try to like your own country and her traditions NT, it's good for the soul.

I thought you were a good Presbyterian, anaw.

Strange fella you. I enjoy the 2nd of January and haven't drank since Christmas Day.

So many work for banks, insurance companies etc. They are almost all London based so holidays follow the English pattern.

I work for a private sector company which has customers and staff across the UK and I enjoyed my public holiday yesterday. My English colleagues were not as fortunate. My Northern Irish colleagues got to enjoy yesterday and get an additional public holiday at some other point in the year too.

My big bad private company gives me the 2nd off and I enjoyed it watching Hearts beat Livi. Head office in London but regional teams get local holidays.

Definitely felt like a public holiday to me. First role I've been in where I get public holidays rather than having them added to my holiday entitlement but id usually take the first few days of the new year off anyway.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your day off.

I went away for a nice, relaxing, break with the wife and the dog over new year. 4 nights in the Lake District. It would have only been 3 without the holiday yesterday but instead we were able to drive back up the road yesterday morning and get unpacked and settled on the couch in time to endure the match.

Don't mix up hating Scotland with cringing at all the Nationalist ******s

It's hardly an English myth

It's actually an SNP policy to get rid of the drinking culture in Scotland.

Look at the blitz on alcohol pricing and special offers up here

Just checked and yes you're right that they get that date. I was wrong about them getting yesterday though, the other extra date they get is Paddy's Day.

Folk in Jersey and Guernsey get Liberation day, in Alderney they relax on Homecoming day and the lucky Manx get to take advantage of both Senior Race Day and Tynwald day.
