Sky Sports innovations for Edinburgh Derby | SPFL

Interesting Concept:

HIBERNIAN HEAD COACH NICK MONTGOMERY WILL WEAR A MICROPHONE DURING THE MATCH.

Sky Sports will implement a series of innovations for their broadcast of the SPFL fixture Hibs vs Hearts on 27 December, bringing fans closer to one of the fiercest rivalries in the SPFL.

Head Coach of Hibs Nick Montgomery will wear a microphone during the match, enabling fans watching at home to hear the specific coaching and tactics from the sideline. A member of the Hibs coaching staff will wear a bodycam to give a first-person perspective of the team on the pitch from the dugout.

Fans will also experience how players prepare for one of the biggest fixtures in the SPFL calendar, with Sky Sports given access to the Hearts team hotel for a pre-match meal, and a bodycam will be strapped onto a Hearts player during the warmup to deliver a new depth of coverage.

The broadcast aims to capture the passion, drama and key moments of the derby, and follows Sky Sports’ EFL ‘Innovation Game’ last season, which included new behind- the-scenes access for the broadcast of the Wycombe vs Portsmouth match in League One.

Gary Hughes, Director of Football Sky Sports, said: “We strive to be at the forefront of innovation and continue to explore new ways we can enable fans to get closer to the action with our coverage. We are delighted to have been able to work alongside Hibs, Hearts and the SPFL, with a joint ambition to tell the story of this hugely competitive derby to our audience in a new and exciting way."

Neil Doncaster, Group Chief Executive of the SPFL, said: “Were really pleased to have been able to work with both clubs and Sky Sports to showcase their latest broadcasting innovations, helping put supporters right at the heart of the action in the Edinburgh derby.

It promises to be a cracking game and were excited to see how the technology brings the match experience even closer for viewing fans.”

:wtf:

Why? Does anyone who supports any team actually care about that?  Arm chair nonsense.

That being said, I can't wait to hear the "for ****s sakes" live on TV when we put the second and third goals past them. :jj:

Might be quite interesting I suppose . Would far rather they actually just paid us decent broadcast fees to allow us to buy better players and keep hold of our best ones . Not going to knock it until I have seen it in action though

I actually like the sound of this, especially seeing the Hearts pre game build up at the hotel. I would be more interested in having Naismith miked up but nick Montgomery will be an interesting listen as well. Hopefully see footage from the dressing rooms before the game also.

Can’t see this catching on with managers. Giving players explicit tactical instructions that can be easily countered by having a live feed in the dugout.

Good point . Would be great to see the reaction to us scoring the winner there l

So they want to be at the Heart of the action. Remind me how many Edinburgh Derbies have been live recently?

And this one wouldn't be either if the EPL games weren't on Amazon Prime.

Raging.

Why couldn't they have done this when it was Lee Johnson in charge.

Or Pat Fenlon at the 2012 Cup Final....

I dont think they will play the mics live, as there is a real risk that a manager will swear live on air. More likely they will play edited highlights of what he says at half time and after the game.

I think its a welcome idea, opening things up to give fans a greater understanding is always good. I do like in England with the mics from the ref and VAR as it shows you a lot more what happens and how decisions are made.

Surprised Montgomery has agreed to this. Managers and their staff spend half the time covering their mouths so the viewers don't know what they are saying.

first thing that came into my mind too, followed swiftly by….. Rangers and Celtic must’ve refused to take part

not sure I like the idea of cameras intruding pre-match meal and I don’t particularly want to hear from the latest slaver in charge of a Hibs team. The referee, I’d def like to hear his comms

They’ll show content during the game but it’s all being reviewed before going out. A couple of minutes delay probably.

A rotten idea. When I'm watching a game I'm so absorbed with the action on the pitch that what the coaches are saying is just a distraction, We can usually tell what they're thinking when they make changes to shape and players, and I don't need to hear them discussing i. They tried this stuff with golf a few years back when they would interview players walking down the fairway, you could tell the players hated it and I think it was stopped.

"The broadcast aims to capture the passion, drama and key moments of the derby,"... That's all happening on the pitch.

A delay will look silly when he's commenting on what's happening on the pitch?

They still interview golfers on the fairway.

Instructions to players will be shown during breaks in play. Conversations with the commentary team are much less likely to contain bad language and will go out live.

Turning the game into a freak show, hopefully under the red button so I can concentrate on Hibs getting smashed without sideshow Nick

Here’s an innovation: pay is more money.

Common misconception this, they would if Scottish clubs would sell them more games, why the English leagues get more money they sell 3 times as many games, means more weird ko times, but you cant have it both ways

Yep, a few more games a season and the tens of thousands of pounds will be rolling in.

I think our coaching staff will notice if Hibs make a tactical change.

Before they do it, that's novel!

No, as soon as it happens. The Hibs manager being micd up won't make a blind bit of difference.

So you'd be happy micing up and broadcasting....glad you have nothing to do with Hearts

They pay what the game is worth. They're not going to pay over the odds.

I'm just saying its painfully undersold by utter incompetents.

The league structure is what it is to accomodate Skys demand for 4 OF league games. Thats not worth a premium? Doncaster is a clown that doesn't know what he's doing. We're getting outpaced by English League 1 financially.

The inference of it doesn't make ay difference, why would you object?

I have no major opinion on it either way. It's just another Sky idea that will probably be tried two or three times and then die out. If Hearts want to try it, then fine. If Hearts don't want to try it, that's also fine. I don't see it as a big deal.
