WiFi guru advice needed

Got Youfibre in today for new Broadband.

I still have a month left of Virgin.

Getting good speeds on all phones around the house. 250-300mbs.

The problem is my son's room. He has a Asus WiFi card in his PC which gets up to 300mbs on the Virgin WiFi. When he connects to the new router he is below 100mbs. The new router is an Asus zen Pro ET12.  We mucked about with channels and got up to 150.

Son had online support chat which threw up nothing.

Any ideas? Beware I am a  computer dullard. I'm amazed I managed to post this.

Do you know what card is in the PC? Does it support wifi 6? How far away is the PC from the router?

Have you set the router up to have multiple bands? You'd normally want one on AX as that's the fastest but not many devices are compatible. Then you'd want one on G/N for backwards compatibility with older devices.

That's a hefty router so it's either not setup correctly, its too far away or there is a bottle neck elsewhere

Does he need more than 150 for any reason? That's plenty for a single device!

As an aside though Deco WiFi Mesh networks are great.

Thanks for replies guys.

@Dean Winchester

Will try and fathom out compatibilties.

Got to be something like that.

Just hoped the support would have been able to see that.

Will bring the PC down into the same room as the router and see what speeds we get.

Other than that, it's all gobbledygook.

@hughesie27 the laddie does online gaming, no real more than that.

This all sounds far too ridiculously technical for a broadband connection, i hope it's cheap.

Personally i'd just stay with virgin, buy your son a console and tell him to get a job.

Streaming multiple porn site at the same time takes some bandwidth. Just ask a certain Scottish minister...

Yeah AC is WiFi 5 so a generation behind your router. You want a AX/WiFi 6 receiver for maximum compatibility and speed.

Cheers Deano  👍

Sorry to hijack, I'm also thinking of getting youfibre installed, it's now live in Livingston. Has it been OK so far?

Can you buy anything to plug into an old computer (2013 iMac) to take it up to WiFi 6?

Dont know much about Macs. I would have thought you'd be able to find a WiFi 6 USB dongle that should work.

Went full tonto for the biggest package as it was still cheaper than my 1gb virgin.

I took a static ip address also, but installer couldn't get it to work.

Other than that, speeds are excellent throughout the house.

Annoyance was that the sons pc wouldn't match virgins speeds, but solved that issue on here. Disappointing that their support depth didn't suggest that the network card was not up to spec.

Is the router broadcasting the SSID for 2.4ghz and 5ghz separately?

I set my router up so it does and can make sure i am connected to the faster 5ghz profile.

@kila we do have TP link adaptors, but it was slower than the WiFi.

Are they old? I wouldn't expect that unless they were only rated up to 100mbs, or if you have electrical wiring issues in your house or something.

Re 5ghz, it is faster than 2.4, but it's not as good at going round corners or through obstacles so you may lose the benefit.

Never needed a Wi-Fi connection when I was looking for discarded pages of Razzle in hedges behind the park.

Still needed to be fast or some other young perv would get there first...

I'm pretty hopeless at this.

When I first searched you could select 2.4 or 5.

But after selecting you didn't get a choice, maybe next few days, will get a better look at the router set-up.

You'll be able to pick up 500s or higher for little these days, your local cash converter's a cheap gamble.

I love powerline, it's such an elegant use of technology and it just never really took off.

I had a 5ghz racer, my mate had a 2.4 BMX. He was better dealing with obstacles too, but that old railway track's a pretty straight line!

When I was a teenager my mate Paul and me used to get hold of booze then go up to disused part of local hospital outbuildings and have a bonfire and get drunk. One evening on the way through the woods we must've disturbed some perv as we found a circle of jazzmags all sitting open! Of course we thought "great", scooped them all up and took them with us. Spent about 4hrs getting progressively drunk on cider and vodka (bad combo!) and taking turns reading the stories like "actors" until it got too dark and we were too drunk to see! Was one of the funniest things I've ever done TBH. At midnight we stashed the pron and set off on shortcut through a cow field - big mistake, as we were so drunk we fell over the fence and then failed miserably to negotiate the deep hoofprints and fell all over the place as we crossed the field. Eventually got to the other side and went our separate ways, covered in mud and cowpat...I had about 2 miles to walk home and started being sick after about 1 mile. Reason my parents realised I was home was when I conked out and smacked my head on the front door...Woke up the next morning on a bed, rolled over to find I was still covered in mud and sht and then saw a sick bucket next to the bed - "oh God it WAS real, not a dream"...Got grounded for 2 weeks and banned from seeing Paul for a month...He was found by his neighbour wandering the streets and returned home by the neighbour!!!

I think its definitely worth doing so you know your connected to the fastest possible, or the 2.4ghz if your further away.

My router has a simple checkbox -

I'll be honest, that story ended a lot differently to where I thought it was going.

I'm in Livingston and got youfibre about February/March, not had any problems with it. Average speeds are 920Mb down and 920Mb up.

Was £54 per month with Virgin 150Mb down and 15Mb up.

£29.99 a month with Youfibre.
