Newcastle recommendations

Can anyone based in Geordieland (or anywhere for that matter) come up with some good suggestions for places to eat or drink in Newcastle? We’re heading down there in early December for a couple of nights.

I’d be particularly interested in pubs with a good selection of cask beers - if they do decent grub as well, so much the better - and Greek / Turkish / Middle-Eastern restaurants. I’d also be happy to hear about decent Italian (regional rather than generic), central or eastern European, or Asian (Thai, Vietnamese, Indian / Southern Indian) places. Not too expensive either, ideally, as we’re a bit grippy! 😉

We’re staying centrally, but recommendations outside the centre (I’d heard Jesmond had become a decent area for pubs & eating-places 🤔) would be fine too, so over to you, canny  lads an’ lasses!

Try this place if you're into your beers. 👍

Love a trip down there.  A great place to pub hop

Bodega

Tilleys

Free Trade Inn

The Tyne Bar

wobbly duck

Town Mouse

Head Of Steam x2

The Strawberry

Lost Wanderer ( brilliant free old style jukebox and next door is a decent Turkish Meze place)

end the night at Flares or Sargent Peppers Music Bar 😀

Thanks HJ.

"Moderately priced" probably best describes what we're after regarding grub.  (Could possibly stretch to "medium budget" as it's my birthday and she's paying! :))

Not for food but depending on your age and music tastes I’d recommend Hoochie Coochie for daytime drinking. Handy for those of us who can’t make the 4am’s anymore.

Remember Kafeneon being decent Greek food. Didn't find newcastle to be the best eating city tbh...

It's a very underrated city for food however I am also taking North Tyneside into consideration too.

Well, I'm an old git*, but I do like funk and a fair amount of "sweet soul music". Even disco, if Nile Rodgers is on guitar. :jambobanana:

Not sure if it's what we'll be after for our brief stay, but I'll keep it in mind anyway. :icon14:

(*Who absolutely can't make the 4 AMs anymore, unless they consist of getting up for a pee that is... :ermm:)

It looks like there are quite a few Persian & Middle-Eastern restaurants, which is certainly of interest to us for our trip.

I think I'd need 2 weeks to get round all of the pubs mentioned in the thread, rather than 2 nights! Oh well, we'll just need to come back. :) 🍻

Ok fella,

some thoughts.

if you want Asian head to stowel street which is the mini china town of Newcastle.

king Neptune has always got a great review but probably the most expensive.

Another close by in the area that is very good and cheaper would be

https://www.chillipadi.co.uk/_files/ugd/9e14e0_735415aa35244dddb13de397e15d2034.pdf

if you want Vietnamese go here: -

https://ngonncl.co.uk/

this is very good place to eat and in the centre of town.

regarding Italian. There’s loads but nothing I can think of that is really authentic.

there are several Middle Eastern restaurants all pretty good.

if you are heading to Jesmond (generally a younger crowd) go to:-

https://sarayturkishrestaurant.co.uk/

it’s good, but the real ale selection in Jesmond is guff.

In the centre of town consider:-

https://ottomanturkish.co.uk/

or

https://persiarestaurantonline.co.uk/

but if you are in this neck of the woods and want to go out on a limb try this place

https://www.mosobgezana.co.uk/

upstairs between 2 sex shops it looks like a dive but the food is cheep and great.

curry places in town:-

https://sachins.co.uk/

or

https://dabbawal.com/

if your looking for bar lunch meal go to the quayside and try

https://www.thebridgetavern.com/

Great beer, brews it’s own also and if it’s good enough for Jonny depp should be ok for you 😀

it’s also opposite the crown passade a great boozer and one of the all time best in Newcastle with listed Tiffany stain glass windows.

also next to a very good Indian

https://khaikhai.co.uk/

Harrison Ford’s favourite haunt

and the cheeper https://www.uryrestaurants.co.uk/

another good place to consider is the Ousburn valley.

https://www.ouseburntrust.org.uk/ouseburn-pubs-restaurants-cafes

several fantastic pubs here and you can spend a good day here.

cant fail with the Cumberland arms the Tyne or the brinkburn brewery which does a fantastic Sunday lunch (book in advance)

it is worth a day here.

also remember Newcastle is pretty small and walkable or very short taxi rides

regarding pubs. A good list has already been mentioned but this is a good link

Finally if you want to try something different get the metro to tynemouth, beach/coast . 25 mins only from town

loads of good boozers (turks head and Sunday lunch eats.

Free Trade Inn , NE6 1AP, has the best selection of ales I've seen in Newcastle.

No Sky, no TV, no frills. Nice professional clientele in the early evenings.

Not exactly city centre though but easily walkable from the quayside if you're down there.

I'd defo consider a wee trip to Tynemouth - have done it a few times.

That's brilliant - thanks again HJ. :icon14: 🍻

Back in the early 80s, I used to be quite familiar with Newcastle and some of the surrounding area as I was going out with a Geordie lass and came down every 2nd weekend or so. I know things will have changed a lot since then - same as everywhere else - so it'll be really interesting wandering around again and checking-out as many of the many recommendations I've had on here as I can.

We might even go to a gallery or museum, or whatever, as I'm not up to spending all day in the pub these days!  :ermm:
