As a spot of light relief from yesterdays woes, theres a thread popped up on .nugget just now enitled "Hibs Fans Contemporary Social Identity". It appears one of the Warrior Poets has away and got himself an education and is doing a disertation on the above.

His post asks this...

Hi, I am writing my dissertation on the social identity of hibs fans and I'm interested to know...

Do you feel there is a sense of “Irishness” amongst hibs supporters today?

How does Hibs embrace its Irish heritage in Scotland without being inevitably labelled ‘sectarian’?

Do you see Leith as having a separate identity from Edinburgh?

Gentleman fill yer boots...

Summed up:

For no practical reason, I'm writing my dissertation on a subject I have absolutely no ****ing idea about. Currently I have a word document that only has a title and I'm already out of ideas.  I've picked a subjective topic that is of very little worth to anyone other than myself that is proving hard to make something up about.

Can you lot please do all of my work for me, so I can cobble together a completely meaningless document that's primary source is an Internet forum that frequently goes into complete meltdown when Hibs lose a fixture.  Balanced views only please, my BTEC in Creative Writing depends on it.

Pulitzer Prize winner incoming.

I like when they express their social identity by getting shot in the head years after appearing in a shite cable TV show by Danny Dyer . Particularly the ones who sell class A drugs to kids leading to their lives being destroyed

I also love the social identity of not even very thinly veiled rapists thugs who appear as heroes in books like “ Hibs Boy “

I like more than anything when they call Hearts players “ black *******s “ and “ looky looky men “ or say they look like Eddie Murphy just because they are black………

Oh and what a cultural identity they share with Irish immigrants when they sing “ Rudi Skacel is a ****ing refugee “

Why plastic socialist wankers like Stuart Cosgrove encourage and entertain these simpletons I really have no idea

Hibs are scum

I'd presume that most have been "fathered" down Leith docks over the decades hence their skaggy nature.

The irish or many other nationalities that swung the lead up their grannies and great grannies could well be a valid debate for the pricks in holyrood hoose.

Still 2 facts stand the sailors will have caught a dose while their sons , Irish or no were in bed with their sisters.

Funny thing is they are not from Leith. It was the Irish immigrants that lived in the Cowgate and Dumbiedykes in South side that started the now spoon burners. St Patrick's Church in Cowgate to be exact.  I went to south bridge primary next door to the primary school of the same name. Both schools no longer running. We both played football in the meadows. We are both teams from the south side of town. Just moved to football pitches away from it's beginnings. Any hearts fan should know that and should any hibs fans. Leith. 😂😂 ****ing idiots.

To be fair they moved to Leith in 1880.

Yeh but they still were from South side. As were we. This Leith shit and the ship on the badge makes me laugh on how stupid hibs fans really are. I'm from South side and born in Leith. It was hard being a jambo where I lived. I know all about the history of the south side believe me.

FFS they have been in Leith since 1880 - they are a Leith side.

Your missing the bigger picture though. If you were born in Edinburgh and moved to Glasgow when your 6 or 7. You're still from Edinburgh no? Leith no South Side yes. We are the same. Started in the south side playing or football in the meadows then on going professional footballers moving to where we are now. But our history starts in the Southside and the meadows and the badge from the south side royal mile. I'll just leave that for your dissertation.

Not sure how old you are but all the Hearts guys I know who are from that part of Edinburgh never felt that way . Plenty of them back in the day

I wasn't aware the Hobbos denied their start was a couple of miles south of their current ground.

Hearts are fae Gorgie not the Meadows.

Ironically, one of the best things about almost every Hibs fan I know is that they are interested in football much more than identity.

And until our fans cut out certain songs, they'll be ahead of us in that respect.

Also worth noting that their notions about football are entirely about the flairmeister 'taught Brazil to play' variety.

In other words, they're completely deluded but refreshingly uninterested in Irish history / identity / religion / that kind of thing.

Edit:  And what a preposterous dissertation topic. Obviously doing a Masters in Sport Mythology or suchlike.

Hang on a minute here ………… I know literally dozens of Hearts supporters and none of them are more interested in identity than football

The Hibs fans I know or have met are almost always to a man more likely to try and identify as Hibs like it says something else about them other than the team they chose to follow

You were right about the deluded bit though

Then we're probably on the same side.

But that doesn't erase the naughty words I heard at Hampden last week, or the flag that appeared in the Gorgie stand recently.

Oh we definitely have some total Fannie’s in our support

Thankfully I just dont move in those sort of circles . I have never met a Hibs fan who was not totally deluded about their imaginary identity though

Nor have I.

But it's an identity (fantasy) about being football connoisseurs rather than some plastic paddiness. The many I know, anyway.

No doubt, other Hibs fans are available.

I know plenty Hibs fans that'll happily go to Rebel nights and have beyond a soft spot for Celtic.

But aye. We're all sectarian arseholes with no identity and they're all about the football.

No they are not. Only one true Leith team and that is Leith Athletic.

Hibernian FC have never been a Leith team. As they themselves claim.

Edinburgh since 1875, and even that can be disputed to 1893.

There's a similar thread on Hibsbounce (or whatever it's called).

Hibernian are a club that shy's away from its roots, have half a fanbase that would rather not dwell on it, another half who desperately want to and neither can decide if they're Edinburgh or Leith and all whilst having a Lochend postcode.

It must be awful supporting a club with an identity crisis.

Heart of Midlothian are what we've been since 1874:

Edinburgh Darlin's and open to all.

Correct. We petitioned the SFA to let them play in the Scottish League and were fined for continuing to play them.

Their mere existence and continued relevance is solely down to us....Twice. :whistling:

1.05 the highlight.

Is there any surviving stuff from the Hibs end on 19-05-12?

I've never seen anything but, of course, would love to.

Probably all deleted when they got back to their cars, buses and trains a little after 4pm, I suppose.

They’re not a Leith club in the sense they were founded in Leith, that’s for sure.

I’ve got doubts Hibs actually reside in Leith either as Easter Rd doesn’t have a EH6 postcode (although that in itself might not mean they’re outside the Leith boundary).

But there’s no doubt their proximity to Leith (which has existed for c.140 years) allows them to claim (spuriously or otherwise) Leith’s affections and to identify with that area.

As an earlier post pointed out, Hearts identify with Gorgie, despite the club’s South Side beginnings.

As for Leith Athletic, yes, their origins were in Leith, but they spent much of their existence playing away from Leith at grounds such as Old Logie Green, Powderhall, Marine Gardens, and Old Meadowbank.

Hibernian FC can claim all they want. They are and never have been a Leith team.
