Not sure I have any point really🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes it was tough growing up in the 80s with virulent homophobia , aids / Hiv and discrimination . But it was also a fantastic time too if you were young and out on the town too . I went to London a lot with my first “ husband” and had glorious times so don’t regret a thing .

I was careful re sex and drugs so came out of it unscathed . I had little to no bother as a gay lad growing up in an estate as my family were a bunch of hard nuts so anyone saying anything had the risk of getting a dooin . I did get mild abuse but that’s part and parcel of being a gay . Toughened me up

to deal with adversities and pillocks in later life !! As one can see I’m still dealing with pillocks ! 😂😎

So if it's misogyny when a heterosexual man talks about women like this, what is it when a homosexual man does it? Condescending is the least of it.

I’d rather not, she annoyed the feck out of me growing up. Her Liverpodlian shrill still annoys me. 😡

Plus Cilla Black can’t seriously be your benchmark for class 😂 What am I missing?

She isn't my benchmark for class. She was an example of the nouveau riche. I couldn't spell that initially. She was a horrendous boot. My point was class cant be bought. You either have it or you dont.

Strictly speaking, it wasn't actually. It was certainly the case that there was a requirement to 'live in the force area'. For somewhere like Lothian and Borders though that meant you could live in Hawick and work in South Queensferry! That said, commonly people worked near where they lived on purely practical terms but there was no requirement to live in the actual town. That wouldn't have been practical and there were never enough police houses to allow for that anyway.

Police houses were really a throwback to a time when police pay and conditions were a lot poorer and it was part of the package of benefits that encouraged people to join, along with boot allowance, free dental care and plain clothes allowance for the CID amongst others. A major one was 'rent allowance', and people who had a police house didn't get that. Those without a police house did. As pay improved, rent allowance was discontinued in the  early 1990's and subsumed into wages. Most cops had mortgages by then anyway. With that, police houses became redundant and most were sold off either to existing occupants, on the open market or sometimes used to expand the stations they were attached to.

What I would say is that in the 70's and into the 80's, many police officers did work where they lived but that was more of a throwback to the time when car ownership was much lower and a significant proportion of any local population did the same. That was also a time when towns had shopping streets worthy of the name and society was much less transient in general. It's true though that people did tend to work at the same station for much longer and it wasn't unknown for someone to do 20 years or more in the same place, leading to extensive local knowledge and connection. There's more of an emphasis on 'move for experience' now so that he's been lost sadly.

As well as the 2 houses Blackburn had joined to the station (dog handler and sergeant) the council built a row of 7/8 houses that only police or doctors could occupy. The doctors never bothered so they were filled with local coppers. Gradually as the older cops retired the houses were filled with run-of-the-mill council tenants as newer cops seemed to want to stay elsewhere.

Houses to this day are still known as the "police houses" to us older types.

Ok, full disclosure first. I used to be a police officer and retired about ten years ago. I come not to defend or decry Police Scotland, just to give some historical perspective... First of all, I tend not to get into the whole 'it was better in my day' thing. When I joined in the early 80's, there were people coming to the end of their career telling me 'the job's ****ed'. I heard people saying that for the next 30 odd years.... :)

Here's my point though. Folks above speak about under funding, and that may be part of it. However, when I started the total police establishment for Scotland's eight forces was about 14,000. Now, under Police Scotland it's 17,000 plus (or has been). I remember being out on the nightshift, and we were falling over each other to answer calls. In reference to the OP, this was in West Lothian. We would have two at Blackburn, Sergeant plus 4 or 5 at Whitburn, two each  at Fauldhouse and Armadale, Sergeant and six at Bathgate and so on... Livingston would have high teens at least. Calls never went unanswered and there was always assistance if you needed it. Why, with 3000 more cops, is this not the case and calls go unanswered for days, if they get answered at all?

I don't know if there's a simple answer like 'underfunding' but back then there was the beat cops, a specialist Traffic and CID support in each division, and that was about it. I think that there are now many more 'specialisms' and lots of supporting departments that we didn't have. I'm not saying that would be easy to roll back because they have grown into their work areas, many of which are very important, but those cops not answering calls on the nightshift must be getting hoovered up somewhere.

I loved my time and in the same circumstances would do it again, but policing now has become so politicised and scrutinised that I really feel sorry for people starting out in a much different job. I wouldn't say it's ****ed though, because I've had my time and it's up to them now to make of it what they will.

You probably knew or know one of my mates. He was a cop in Livingston and West Calder among other assignments. he has been retired now for probably 15 or more years after about 30 yrs service

Got to know the Controlled drugs inspection officers pretty well as we probably dealt with the same people.

Always had a very healthy respect for the job they had to do

Quite likely. I 'm retired 11 years come October, although I left West Lothian in 1996. As I said, we didn't move about as much back then so we knew each other better. Was he/she a Hearts supporter?

No. A big Rugby fan though. He ended up an Inspector before retiring. Not gonna give his name out on a public forum but his initials are J..T.
