Ultimately the value of anything is what someone is willing to pay for it, and if someone is willing to pay £20k, £50k £500k or even £7m then that is the value of the item.  No idea what someone would be willing to pay for Messi’s top but kudos to Cammy for grabbing an undoubtably valuable piece of sporting memorabilia.

If Messi and Argentina win the world cup then I can see a collector being prepared to spend a lot more than five figures if they wanted to try and buy it from him

Not sure if the top was signed…….if not how do you prove in years to come that it’s authentic?  Suppose I buy the same top and in a few years time I say I met Cammy in a pub in Edinburgh and won the top on a bet…….just saying like 🙄

As per the thread title , I would love Messis shirt obviously , but where can I get myself one of these Cammy Devlin bags ? That’s the real prize

erm............Maradonna's Hand of God shirt is a whole different world from a modern shirt v Australia. It's not comparable.  That shirt and Pele's 1970 final shirt is on a whole different level.

Found the selling of Maradona's shirt a bit off.

Someone instantly forgettable getting ridiculous money off the back of the player, who gets sweet FA.

I understand Hodge selling it in the end, as the value had gone to beyond silly in the end. Becomes worrying keeping something of that value. He probably never ever had any intention of selling it.

Probably a case of cashing in at the right time for something that was either locked away due to it's value or becoming a burden insurance wise. Cashed in for his family I guess.

Easily worth over 100k. Perhaps even more given it was his 1000th game.

Maradona tops fetched silly money and there are many Messi fan boys around.

I'm CR7 myself but if football at any stage doesn't work for Cammy that bit of memorabilia will have him sorted for life.

Going rate seems to be £500,000 perhaps more, as reported in NSW. Good start to a pension plan! Messi saves international shirts from not particularly prominent players. Don’t think he needs a pension plan….🤣

Six of the shirts worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's World Cup-winning campaign are to be sold at auction.

Captain Messi, 36, lifted the trophy after they beat France on penalties in last December's final in Qatar.

His shirt from the final is included in the set of six, which are expected to fetch more than £8m in the auction hosted by Sotheby's in New York.

The record for a game-worn sports shirt is Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for £8.8m in 2022.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's head of modern collectibles, said the sale of Messi's six shirts "stands as a monumental occasion in auction history".

"The 2022 Fifa World Cup stands as one of the greatest events in sports history, intrinsically connected to Messi's valiant journey and firmly establishing his status as the greatest player of all time," Wachter added.

Expected to raise more than £8 Million for 6 of them :wow:

Superb haha - well in wee man!

The one he wore to lift the trophy is probably about 75% of the value of the bundle but still. Cammy's one will be worth a couple hundred k.

If Cammy's is the only one missing whoever buys the set will pay a lot more to complete the set.

The Independent specifies they are "six of the seven first-half shirts the Argentina captain wore in Qatar".

So there's at least 14 shirts of which Cammy has one. Do they all have to change shirt at half time at the World Cup? Is that just so there's more shirts that can be auctioned off?!

I watched the King of collectibles on Netflix and Sports memorabilia is becoming massive and the prices being paid are crazy.

I reckon strips worn in the knockout stages of The World Cup will be more valuable than in the Group stages especially as this is when Messi came to the fore.

Probably have 2 shirts each, but only wore one. Auction will be for all the unworn ones.

Also, why 7?

3 group games, last 32, 16, qf, sf and final

That's 8 matches??

Because there is no round of 32! There will be starting in 2026 though.

If the shirts being auctioned aren’t Match Worn then they will be worth a fraction of the match worn shirts.

if I were Cammy I would be sending someone I trust to the auction to take a note of the main bidders.

Given the media attention it has received I wouldn’t be surprised if the World Cup final shirt is bought by a Qatari sheikh.

These will be strips that Messi kept for himself. I would imagine the missing one is from the Saudi game which they lost.

The shirt Devlin got was the shirt from Messis 1000th game. Bound to add a couple of quid.

Got to think Tiger Woods putter will be right up there one day if it ever goes to auction, could even shatter all the previous records.

Even his backup putter, which has never been used in competition, sold at auction for $330,000...

How Devlin managed to get his hands on Messi's shirt on his 1000th game I'll never know, especially the fact he never even played. You would have thought plenty of folk would have been hounding him for it, especially knowing the value of it. Fair play to Devlin though he's going to have some retirement!

Cammy should keep a hold of his for now, wait till the person who buys the rest wants to complete the set, and then ask for whatever he wants. Chances are he’ll get it.

I imagine that came into the discussions about which member of the team was going to get it.

Cammy didn't get a single minute at the World Cup, but got Messi's 1000th game shirt?  That's a fair enough trade in my books!

Is this Messi auctioning them for money? Or for charity?

And, on that, does he own them or does the Argentinian Federation own the shirt?
