Lone Striker
As a pertinent issue during the current crisis in Ukraine, I've just read a comment from the Scottish Refugee Council on their website. Clause 11 seeks to differentiate between refugees who arrive as part of an official settlement scheme to claim asylum as opposed to those who come "irregularly" (i.e. outwith any such scheme). The majority of asylum seekers fall into the latter category and so this Bill (if it becomes law) leaves them open to be discriminated against when it comes to housing, medical care & benefits - and possibly refused asylum & deported In light of the current Ukraine situation, the timing of this Bill seems extremely cruel - as does this clause. It partly explains Priti Patel's utterances last week about the Seasonal Workers scheme. The House of Lords voted yesterday to remove Clause 11 - but the Commons (with a Tory majority) could well insist on keeping it in. Gizmo
Patel will proudly lay the first brick for Bexhill Refugee Camp shortly. Good on the House of Lords for displaying some humanity - if those out-of-touch privileged elites can see it, I've no doubt the current cruel and capricious twats in goverment won't.
